The unsolved mystery of the soldier who died in the watchtower
THE GUN TOWER
On the morning of May 11, 2008, a U.S. Army private second class named
Matthew Warren Brown died of a single gunshot wound to the head while
manning a watchtower at a forward operating base in Afghanistan. From left, The Sergeant, after photographing the scene, Armando Torres went downstairs to clear Brown’s weapon alone; The Specialist, Aaron Cianfrocco’s initial statement was lost, Torres said the thumb drive it was stored on had been corrupted; The Deputy, Matthew Jackson, along with Torres, spent time at the scene unsupervised. When C.I.D. agents finally got to her door more than a month after
Brown’s death, Evans says, she told them about her son’s account of a
drug ring at the base, a domineering sergeant, a threat of violence, and
his premonition of death.
