The Realities of Deep Work

The opposite of Deep Work is what Newport calls “shallow work”—the emails, updates, meetings, calls, and other busy work that is “often performed while distracted [and] tends not to create much new value in the world…”

Unfortunately for most of us, our days are dominated by Shallow work with little room for anything else. Instead of starting his day with the attention-scattering act of opening his inbox, Brad set time aside for focused, Deep Work. However, one of the other major benefits of scheduling every minute of his day was that he had a plan for getting back into his routine:
