H.264, like other lossy image algorithms, discards detail information. So here is what our image looks like in the frequency domain:

The fine grill on that MacBook pro has a high information content in the higher frequency components of that image. Because now, you can take that frequency domain image and then mask out the edges – discard information which will contain the information with high frequency components.
