The Cul-de-Sac of the Computational Metaphor
In Turing’s computation, we use metaphors of place, and state, and change of state at place, and that’s the way we think about computation. I’m going to give you some examples of where computation is not a good metaphor at all for thinking about things. It’s possible that there are other metaphors we should be using and maybe concentrating on, because with our current computational thinking we tend to end up doing our experiments and our simulations in unrealistic regimes where it’s convenient for computation.
