Durham Pathfinder Free-School: Self-Directed Learning

It was the first day of school, and Wilder, the founder and director of Pathfinder Community School, had spent the morning greeting arriving students and their families. Research on free schooling is slim, but the few extant studies that do exist—most by a Boston College psychologist who’s become a proselytizer—suggest that alumni go on to college and successful careers at the same rate as children from traditional schools. Like Sudbury Valley, Pathfinder is “democratic” as well as “free,” so children take an active part in school decisions—not just on trivial questions like whether to install a vending machine (more on that later), but on much of the discretionary budget.
