‘I’m either too black or not black enough’: One teenager’s experience
There are so few black students at my school that by next year, there’s a good chance that no one in secondary will have black skin. These students are proud of where they come from, but they also identify with “black culture,” meaning rap music, hip-hop apparel and sneakers. The N-word is something that African Americans have carried for generations, and when we use this word in our music and to one another, it is as a form of empowerment.
