Annette Kellerman – the modern swimmer for modern women

Known as the ‘Diving Venus’ and the ‘Australian Mermaid’, Annette Kellerman (1887–1975) was an athlete as well as a vaudeville and movie star, one of the most famous women of her day. In 1905, holding all the world records for women’s swimming, Kellerman set off for London with her father. Theatre magazine’s review said:

Kellerman was famous for her advocacy of the right of women to wear a one-piece swimsuit.
