Research into the reasons for trepanation (2016)

For a large part of human prehistory, people around the world practised trepanation: a crude surgical procedure that involves forming a hole in the skull of a living person by either drilling, cutting or scraping away layers of bone with a sharp implement. Many trepanned skulls show signs of cranial injuries or neurological diseases, often in the same region of the skull where the trepanation hole was made. Now Gresky, Batieva and other archaeologists have teamed up to describe all 12 of the obelion trepanations from Southern Russia.

Food-Delivery Couriers Exploit Desperate Migrants in France

Food-Delivery Couriers Exploit Desperate Migrants in France

PARIS — Aymen Arfaoui strapped on a plastic Uber Eats bag and checked his cellphone for the fastest bicycle route before pedaling into the stream of cars circling the Place de la République. Mr. Arfaoui has no working papers, and he would pocket a little more than half that day’s earnings. The Parisian courier had outsourced the job illicitly to Mr. Arfaoui, who had been living in an abandoned car for a month after arriving from Tunisia.

Carnival Cruises emits ten times more sulphur oxide than all of Europe’s cars

Carnival Cruises emits ten times more sulphur oxide than all of Europe’s cars

NOX emissions from cruise ships in Europe also heavily impact some cities, equivalent to about 15% of the nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by Europe’s passenger car fleet in a year, the report finds. In Marseille, for example, 57 cruise ships emitted in 2017 almost as much NOx as one-quarter of the city’s 340,000 passenger cars. Along the coasts of countries such as Norway, Denmark, Greece, Croatia and Malta a handful of cruise ships are also responsible for more NOx than the majority of their domestic car fleet.

SIM swap horror story: I’ve lost decades of data and Google won’t lift a finger

SIM swap horror story: I’ve lost decades of data and Google won’t lift a finger

Thankfully, at the time I still had a Google Fi SIM in a Pixel 3 XL so I called T-Mobile and told them my physical SIM is still in my iPhone and I did NOT authorize any change to my account. Also: Wave of SIM swapping attacks hit US cryptocurrency users
I was able to get T-Mobile to assign my phone number and service back to my phone by giving them the SIM card ID number and then having them send a text to one of the other four phone numbers in my account where I then read back the verification code. If you have a Google account then I recommend you go into your settings and establish the following in case you need to reset your password on a stolen account:
Google Authenticator
Cell phone number for text code
8-digit backup code
Other phone number associated with your account
Email for recovery
Month and year when you started using Gmail

I had some of this information, but the hacker changed everything in the list above except for one email address that was still controlled by me.

The Future of Docker Desktop for Windows

The Future of Docker Desktop for Windows

It will make the Docker experience for developing with containers even greater, unlock new capabilities, and because WSL 2 works on Windows 10 Home edition, so will Docker Desktop. As an example, a developer at Docker can now work on the Linux Docker daemon on Windows, using the same set of tools and scripts as a developer on a Linux machine:

Also, bind mounts from WSL will support inotify events and have nearly identical I/O performance as on a native Linux machine, which will solve one of the major Docker Desktop pain points with I/O-heavy toolchains. Combined with Visual Studio Code “Remote to WSL”, Docker Desktop Linux workspaces will make it possible to run a full Linux toolchain for building containers on your local machine, from your IDE running on Windows.

People Met in Hotel Lobbies (2017)

People Met in Hotel Lobbies (2017)

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Washington Post ran a regular column under the charmingly Victorian title “People Met in Hotel Lobbies.” So the Post had reporters whose job was simply to hang out in the lobbies of the city’s fashionable hotels, interviewing anybody who happened to walk by, on the theory that if you were the sort of person who would be walking through a hotel lobby your opinions were probably worth recording. This was before two World Wars made Washington the capital of the free world, and the people who pass through “In Hotel Lobbies” are for the most part dreary bores pursuing the sorts of business one would pursue in the provincial capital of a provincial nation: businessmen seeking adjustments to this law or that tariff, boosters of development projects trying to drum up backing for their latest scheme, local political nabobs come to kiss their party leaders’ rings.

Towards Multiverse Databases

Towards Multiverse Databases

Where an edge in the dataflow graph crosses a universe boundary, any necessary dataflow operators to enforce the required privacy policies are inserted. All applicable policies are applied on every edge that transitions into a given user universe, so whichever path data takes to get there we know the policies will have been enforced. The team compare the prototype with 5,000 active user universes, a MySQL implementation with inlined privacy policies (‘with AP’) and a MySQL implementation that does not enforce the privacy policy (‘without AP’):

Since the prototype is serving reads from a pre-computed universe stored in memory cached results are fast and make for a very favourable comparison against MySQL.

Origin Of Wireless Security: The Marconi Radio Hack Of 1903 (2017)

Origin Of Wireless Security: The Marconi Radio Hack Of 1903 (2017)

The date is the 4th of June 1903, and the inventor, Guglielmo Marconi, is about to demonstrate his new wireless system, which he claims can securely send messages over a long distance, without interference by tuning the signal. One of the fundamental claims of Marconi was that because his system used a tuned signal, other signals would not interfere unless they were tuned to the same frequency. The ease with which Maskelyne could monitor the signals was also an eye-opener for governments and lead to the development of wireless encryption systems that were used in World War I, II and beyond.
