Origin Of Wireless Security: The Marconi Radio Hack Of 1903

The date is the 4th of June 1903, and the inventor, Guglielmo Marconi, is about to demonstrate his new wireless system, which he claims can securely send messages over a long distance, without interference by tuning the signal. One of the fundamental claims of Marconi was that because his system used a tuned signal, other signals would not interfere unless they were tuned to the same frequency. The ease with which Maskelyne could monitor the signals was also an eye-opener for governments and lead to the development of wireless encryption systems that were used in World War I, II and beyond.

For some of the same reasons, a big screen of any kind that’s closer to the driver’s eyes—like in the Tesla Model 3—isn’t the answer either, Mazda insists. For instance, Acura’s newest infotainment system in the RDX has a True Touchpad technology that maintains the same touchpad location for virtual buttons each time, relating them to the screen position; and Lexus’ Remote Touch system uses tactile blips and confirmation sounds as you hover from virtual button to virtual button. For Mazda’s newest system in the Mazda 3, the Command Controller is repositioned within the center console so as to feel more natural for those of shorter stature, to allow menu navigation, using what the team called fine motor skills rather than the gross motor skills required by a touchscreen.

Newly recovered Ground Zero photos show why you should back up your CD-Rs now

Newly recovered Ground Zero photos show why you should back up your CD-Rs now

When comedian and activist Jon Stewart gave an impassioned speech before Congress to seek ongoing aid for 9/11 first responders, it inspired Internet Archive software curator and digital preservationist Jason Scott to share something timely with the world as well: a newly discovered cache of photos from one of the workers who toiled away at Ground Zero, and who’d saved thousands of those photos on CD-R. But Scott says he wasn’t actually able to preserve all of those photos, because of the way they were stored. If these photos move you, the photographer’s family asks if you might consider donating some money to a charity that supports first responders.

Leonardo da Vinci’s forgotten musical invention

Leonardo da Vinci’s forgotten musical invention

The instrument wasn’t built during Leonardo da Vinci’s lifetime, and it was only in 2013 that Polish instrument-maker Sławomir Zubrzycki built the first example. The unusual instrument is a hybrid of elements from a harpsichord, an organ and a viola da gamba. “I have no idea what Leonardo da Vinci might think of the instrument I’ve made, but I’d hope he’d be pleased,” Zubrzycki said, at the instrument’s unveiling concert in Krakow.

Broadcom’s $2B warning rattles global chip sector

Broadcom’s $2B warning rattles global chip sector

LONDON/BENGALURU (Reuters) – Broadcom Inc sent a shockwave through the global chipmaking industry on Friday with its forecast that U.S.-China trade tensions and the ban on doing business with Huawei Technologies would knock $2 billion off the company’s sales this year. “We believe Broadcom’s 2H19 outlook is not only impacted by the direct Huawei export ban, but also includes the indirect impact from the Huawei export ban to other customers as well as the possible industry-wide impact of the possible additional import tariffs,” Summit Insights Group analyst Kinngai Chan said. “I think you have seen all the companies (Qorvo, Skyworks, Maxlinear, Cree, Inphi, Lumentum, NeoPhotonics) which pre-announced negative for about half their quarter’s impact due to this Huawei export ban,” Chan said.

From Cuba to Greeneland

From Cuba to Greeneland

In 1988, anticipating my first visit to Soviet Tallinn, I wrote to Greene asking why he moved Our Man in Havana from Estonia in the 1930s to Cuba in the 1950s. Christopher Hull, a lecturer in Spanish and Latin American studies at the University of Chester, argues convincingly in his fascinating exploration of the history behind Greene’s satirical spy novel that Wormold’s character borrowed from both Leslie and Greene’s “black sheep” elder brother Herbert, a fantasist who consorted with remittance men, confidence-tricksters and other compromised characters who inhabit “Greene-land”. The difference a dad can make

The difference a dad can make

The title of my book, The Moment of Lift, was inspired by memories of watching rocket launches together as a family, all of us so proud of the role my dad played in them. And I realize now how lucky I am to have a dad who’s always been one of those forces pushing me higher. Dad, today and every day, I have so much to thank you for.

Feynman’s Breakthrough, Disregard Others (2017)

[…]

At Chicago, Feynman and I shared a suite in the Quadrangle Club, the university’s faculty club. That evening there was a cocktail party and dinner in Feynman’s honor at the Quadrangle Club. And so, sitting in the living room of our suite, from one to five in the morning, with Feynman waiting impatiently for me to finish, I read the manuscript that would become The Double Helix.

Marijuana Damages Young Brains

Marijuana Damages Young Brains

In the early 1990s, the average THC content of confiscated marijuana was roughly 3.7 percent. The proposals for legalizing marijuana under consideration in New York and New Jersey allow for use starting at age 21. Simply because society has become more accepting of marijuana use doesn’t make it safe for high school and college students.

A typical arrangement you see with DIY/low budget hexapod legs is to have what I’m calling a “hip” servo, that rotates in the horizontal plane, and what I’m calling an “ankle” servo that rotates in the vertical plane, like this:

Together, these allow it to move left and right. I quickly whipped up a leg in Onshape:

If you’ve messed around with hobby servos at all, you’ve likely seen these, the classic SG90 servos. I tried upping the output of the regulator to be 6, 7V (because the servos can take that much and I thought maybe the voltage was dipping under high load).
