Greenland lost 2B tons of ice yesterday, which is unusual

Yesterday (13th June), we calculate #Greenland #icesheet lost more than 2 Gt (2 km³) of ice,, melt was widespread but didn’t quite get to #SummitCamp which was just below 0°C The high melt is unusual so early in the season but not unprecedented https://t.co/Ftg0fkC7AK sudden spike in melting “is unusual, but not unprecedented,” according to Thomas Mote, a research scientist at the University of Georgia who studies Greenland’s climate. “It is comparable to some spikes we saw in June of 2012,” Mote told CNN, referring to the record-setting melt year of 2012 that saw almost the entire ice sheet experience melting for the first time in recorded history. Mote explained how snow and ice melt off the Greenland ice sheet, especially early in the season, makes it easier to for additional melt to occur later in the summer.

Britain’s unexplained wealth orders give the state too much power

Britain’s unexplained wealth orders give the state too much power

Authorities in Britain have begun trying out a new police power called unexplained wealth orders under a law that took effect last year. The first person named as a target of the law was Zamira Hajiyeva, whose story could make even an oligarch blush, assisted by a small fortune in purchases from Harrods cosmetics and perfume counters. Asset forfeiture laws, blessed by the Supreme Court, already let police seize your property on suspicion of involvement in a crime and make you go to court to get it back.

An Instagram star with 2M followers couldn’t sell 36 T-shirts

Miami-based influencer said she had been told by the company producing the brand that she needed to sell at least 36 T-shirts from the first run of products in order for the line to be continued, but Renee didn’t hit the target. Influencer marketing expert Shirley Leigh-Wood Oakes, cofounder of leading brand agency WickerWood, told INSIDER she isn’t surprised Renee failed to sell more T-shirts. Read more: Why brands are turning away from big Instagram influencers to work with people who have small followings instead
Leigh-Wood Oakes stressed that it’s far too simplistic to assume followers will equate to customers — you need to know your potential consumers.

The Touchscreen Infotainment Systems in New Cars Are a Distracting Mess

The Touchscreen Infotainment Systems in New Cars Are a Distracting Mess

If a designer came to me with a bunch of screens, touch pads, or voice-activated haptic-palm-pad gesture controls, I’d trigger a trapdoor that caused the offender to plummet down into the driver’s seat of a Cadillac fitted with the first version of the CUE system—which incorporated a motion sensor that would actually change the screen as your finger approached it. Give me a screen, sure, but also give me some buttons and knobs, stuff I don’t have to look at while I’m driving 70 mph. Why, I remember the early 2000s, when BMW first introduced iDrive, which controlled a dash screen via a central knob and a few menu buttons.

Plastics recycling with worms and microbes further away than people think

Plastics recycling with worms and microbes further away than people think

Bertocchini and her team attributed the peaks to a breakdown product, ethylene glycol, likely generated by a caterpillar enzyme or an enzyme in its gut microbes (Curr. From that microbe, the scientists plucked two enzymes that degraded PET to its monomers of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol (Science 2016, DOI: headlines claimed the microbe could help with recycling, but breakdown took six weeks on a small plastic sample, too slow for immediate applications. Yang, who wasn’t involved with the work, pointed out another caveat of the study in a technical comment in Science: The team in Japan worked with low-crystallinity PET film, which worked better for screening purposes but is relatively easy to degrade compared with the higher-crystallinity PET in water bottles and other common products (2016, DOI: Science

This microbe contains PETase and MHETase, two enzymes that depolymerize PET to its monomers (scheme shown).

This site is my attempt to collect every single version of each Infocom game, both source code and compiled game files. The patches archive contains several game files whose serial numbers are blank or nonsensical. We find game file r69, and another game file whose release number is 32933 (165 with the high bit set) and serial number 880609.

Zero elephants poached in a year in top Africa wildlife park

Zero elephants poached in a year in top Africa wildlife park

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — One of Africa’s largest wildlife preserves is marking a year without a single elephant found killed by poachers, which experts call an extraordinary development in an area larger than Switzerland where thousands of the animals have been slaughtered in recent years. The apparent turnaround in Niassa reserve in a remote region of northern Mozambique comes after the introduction of a rapid intervention police force and more assertive patrolling and response by air, according to the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the reserve with Mozambique’s government and several other partners. The new interventions, with Mozambican President Felipe Nyusi personally authorizing the rapid intervention force, have led partners to hope that Niassa’s elephants “stand a genuine chance for recovery,” the conservation group said.

When should you be using Web Workers?

When should you be using Web Workers?

The main thread has other responsibilties in addition to running a web app’s JavaScript. I said before that the main thread has other responsibilities in addition to running a web app’s JavaScript, and that’s the reason why we need to avoid long, blocking JavaScript on the main thread at all costs. This way they are enforcing both patterns: You always have to chunk your work into tasks so that it can be put in a queue, allowing the UI thread to attend to its other responsibilities whenever necessary, but also allowing you to run non-UI work on a different thread simply by putting the task into a different queue.

Lessons learned from rewriting code in my 10 years as a developer

Lessons learned from rewriting code in my 10 years as a developer

We were building a new team for the corporate product, product owner of AntiMalware was leaving the team, our CTO was taking the responsibility and becoming the new owner (Big mistake, I will explain why). If you fall into this trap too and start thinking “I should rewrite the software from scratch”, consider to ask these questions I believe every developer should ask before taking the first step to code rewriting. You will be in an extremely dangerous position where you will have to ship an old version of the code for months or years, completely unable to make any strategic changes or react to new features that the market demands because you don’t have a shippable code.
