My $3.3M Mistake (2009)

My $3.3M Mistake (2009)

The first time I got a check addressed to “CD Baby”, I brought it down to the bank and told the bank teller, “I need to set this up as a new business, so let’s open a new business account.” “You didn’t know that your dad’s company owns 90% of CD Baby?” Then because the bank teller advised me to make CD Baby an alias of Hit Media, that meant my dad’s company owned 90% of CD Baby as well.

They formed a company called Catapult Entertainment and began work on the XBAND, an inexpensive modem built into a pass-through video game cartridge, along with an online service for it to communicate with. The XBAND service would let gamers play a selection of ordinary, off-the-shelf video game cartridges against other players, regardless of their physical location. Sega Channel consisted of a special cartridge with a coaxial input on the back, paired with an online service that offered a rotating set of downloadable games each month.

Matias RGB Backlit Wired Aluminum Keyboard for Mac

The backlight on this keyboard was SPECIFICALLY designed to address that problem…

Turning the Color Dial all the way to the left or right gets you White (which is 100% Red, Green, and Blue). You can adjust the brightness of the backlight (in 10% increments) anywhere from 0 to 100% …

Hold down the –/+ backlight key, then press + or – to increase/decrease the brightness. You can also select a brightness level directly, by holding down the –/+ backlight key, then pressing a number (1 = 10%, 2 = 20%, etc.).

Lazydocker, a Terminal GUI for Docker

Lazydocker, a Terminal GUI for Docker

I could alternatively run and in that terminal window if the service is down I could just it again, but now I’ve got one service hogging a terminal window even after I no longer care about its logs. What if you had all the information you needed in one terminal window with every common command living one keypress away (and the ability to add custom commands as well). Lazydocker’s goal is to make that dream a reality.

Making Protein Using Air, Water and Electricity

Making Protein Using Air, Water and Electricity

A Finnish company that makes food from electricity, water and air has said it plans to have 50m meals’ worth of its product sold in supermarkets within two years. The Helsinki-based company, assisted by research from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the Lappeenranta University of Technology, will apply to the EU for a novel food licence later this year before starting commercial production in 2021. Vainikka said he did not expect his product, which he described as the world’s most environmentally friendly protein, to challenge farmers in the next two decades but that it was a “new harvest for the people”.

AnimEigo: The AnimEigo Titling System

AnimEigo: The AnimEigo Titling System

If the program needed to change the subtitle at frame “X”, it would instead wait until frame “X-1”, wait a little longer to give the video beam a head-start, and then follow behind it changing pixels in the screen buffer. Since 1 color had to be used for the “transparent” color that let the background video through, and 1 color was needed as a dark “surround” to make the subtitles visible against any background, this meant that only two colors of subtitles could be visible at any one time. Another problem we had was that what with all the moving around of frame buffers, the Mac would often get so bogged down that it didn’t have time to draw all the subtitles before they were needed, and if there was a sequence with a lot of titles in a short period of time, titles would start coming on late.

PiHole-Google: Completely Block Google and Its Services

PiHole-Google: Completely Block Google and Its Services

The GAFAM is an acronym used to describe the five multinational technology companies Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft, taking the first letters of all these companies. The GAFAM are sometimes referred to as the Big Five due to them being the five most profilific companies in the world. Although in some sectors some of the five companies may be in direct competition, they offer different products or services overall while presenting some common characteristics that deserve to bring them together under the same acronym: by their size, they are particularly influential on the American and European Internet both economically and politically and socially and are regularly the subject of criticism or prosecution on tax matters, abuses of dominant positions and the non-respect of Internet users’ privacy.
