The world in which IPv6 was a good design (2017)

The world in which IPv6 was a good design (2017)

To save on electronics, people wanted to have a “bus” network (also known as a “broadcast domain,” a name that will be important later) where multiple stations could just be plugged into a single wire, and talk to any other station plugged into the same wire. Various LAN technologies came and went, including one of my favourites, IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange, though it had nothing to do with the “real” Internet) and Netware, which worked great as long as all the clients and servers were on a single bus network. Devices on ethernet already had addresses, MAC addresses, which were about the only thing the various LAN protocol people could agree on, so they decided to use ethernet addresses as the keys for their routing mechanisms.

Researchers use lasers to detect and destroy tumor cells in melanoma patients

Researchers use lasers to detect and destroy tumor cells in melanoma patients

Tumor cells that spread cancer via the bloodstream face a new foe: a laser beam, shined from outside the skin, that finds and kills these metastatic little demons on the spot. In a study published today in Science Translational Medicine, researchers revealed that their system accurately detected these cells in 27 out of 28 people with cancer, with a sensitivity that is about 1,000 times better than current technology. Cancer spreads when cells from primary tumors break off and travel through the bloodstream and lymph system, settling in new areas of the body and forming secondary tumors.

Web Request: Explaining the Impact on Extensions in Manifest V3

Web Request: Explaining the Impact on Extensions in Manifest V3

With Web Request, Chrome sends all the data in a network request to the listening extension – including any sensitive data contained in that request like personal photos or emails. As a result, extensions that leverage the Web Request API typically have access to read and manipulate everything a user does on the web. Because all of the request data is exposed to the extension, it makes it very easy for a malicious developer to abuse that access to a user’s credentials, accounts, or personal information.

The U.S. is still using many pesticides that are banned in other countries

An analysis of agricultural pesticide regulations reveals that the United States widely uses several chemicals that are banned or being phased out in the European Union, Brazil and China — three of the world’s other leading pesticide users. Currently, 72, 17 and 11 pesticides approved in the United States are banned or being phased out in the EU, Brazil and China, respectively. The imbalance between voluntary cancellations and government regulations creates a bias toward pesticide use in the United States based on economic factors, rather than health and environmental risks, Donley argues.

Microsoft Alternatives project (MAlt): Taking back control using open software

Microsoft Alternatives project (MAlt): Taking back control using open software

Over the years, CERN’s activities and services have increasingly relied on commercial software and solutions to deliver core functionalities, often leveraged by advantageous financial conditions based on the recognition of CERN’s status as an academic, non-profit or research institute. The initial objective was to investigate the migration from commercial software products (Microsoft and others) to open-source solutions, so as to minimise CERN’s exposure to the risks of unsustainable commercial conditions. While the Microsoft Alternatives project is ambitious, it’s also a unique opportunity for CERN to demonstrate that building core services can be done without vendor and data lock-in, that the next generation of services can be tailored to the community’s needs and finally that CERN can inspire its partners by collaborating around a new range of products.

Saudi Arabia is hunting down women who flee country via their IMEI number

Saudi Arabia is hunting down women who flee country via their IMEI number

But according to multiple sources who spoke with INSIDER, this is what has been happening in Saudi Arabia’s quest to track down the growing number of women who flee the country every year. Micah Lee, a computer security engineer and journalist, told INSIDER “it would be trivial for Saudi Arabia, as well as any other country, to track someone’s physical location if they know the IMEI number of their target’s phone.” Read more: Saudi Arabia runs a huge, sinister online database of women that men use to track them and stop them from running away
“Putting a new SIM into a phone will change its IMSI number, but the phone will still have the same IMEI number, so cellphone companies can easily see that these different SIM cards are being used in the same phone,” he said.

Dark Web Drug Sellers Dodge Police Crackdowns

Dark Web Drug Sellers Dodge Police Crackdowns

During the first few months of 2019, American officials conducted an operation called SaboTor, which focused on the vendors selling drugs on the dark net. When the authorities took down the Wall Street Market in early May it had 5,400 vendors, only one-seventh as many as AlphaBay had when it was shuttered two years earlier. Mr. Downing, the Justice Department lawyer, said that for now there was a recognition, even among the authorities, that dark net markets have become an enduring part of the criminal economy.
