Starting with the MacBook Pro in February, 2006, Apple added “Pro” to the names of some of their products — Mac Pro, iMac Pro, iPad Pro. Shade tree product architects had plenty of advice: Take an iMac Pro, break it down, put its screen in a box (that’ll revive the Cinema Display we miss), add slots to the motherboard, put it in a vintage Mac Pro cheese grater case with a suitable power supply, and, voilà… A gap-filling red meat Mac Pro, a sort of Open iMac (if I’m permitted the reference) that would be a great act of contrition for the 2013 machine and the empty years that followed. Well… watching the new Mac Pro introduction at the June 2019 WWDC, I thought Apple execs must have been chuckling backstage: Fooled you!

After discovering the Beaker Browser, a Web browser for the distributed Dat network, I felt that there was some real promise here. Many Beaker apps keep stuff like this in a JSON file. This can only happen in modern times: Javascript has become a competent technology on the server, now all of that good stuff can move into the browser and the whole app doesn’t need a server—in fact, WebAssembly makes Dat even more compelling.

FlexFlow encompasses both of these in its sample (data parallelism), and parameter (model parallelism) dimensions, and also adds an operator dimension (more model parallelism) describing how operators within a DNN should be parallelised, and an attribute dimension with defines how different attributes within a sample should be partitioned (e.g. height and width of an image). The execution simulator takes an operator graph, a device topology, and a parallelization strategy as inputs, ad predicts the execution time. The following charts show the training throughput for the best strategies found by FlexFlow, as compared to vanilla data parallelism or expert-defined strategies:

The strategies found by FlexFlow reduce per-iteration data transfers by 2-5.5x compared to other parallelisation strategies, and also reduce task computation time.

Over the last 20 years I have studied how other structures and systems have lasted over time, and visited as many of them as I can. More recent efforts such as nuclear waste sites, genealogic repositories and seed vaults, are being designed explicitly to last for thousands – or even hundreds of thousands – of years.

The goal of the project is to have people, who live or work in an Africa country, submit pictures of vernacular structures to the data base to share with the world. There is no other resource for African vernacular architecture like the data base: there is no organization gathering information, there is no active research, there is no voice for it.

A maintenance nexus does for humans what an integration nexus does for programs; it provides a way for a human to get into the internals of a system and inspect and modify it as they need. Although I am unfamiliar with Erlang, I gather that the Erlang runtime provides some sort of maintenance nexus, in which one can connect to an Erlang program and obtain some manner of command line, by which the current state of the system can be manipulated from the inside out. The rejection of maintenance nexuses is much rarer than the rejection of integration nexuses; humans don’t want to learn a whole new “inner system” command line to deal with a program’s complicated innards (SQL databases may be an example, though; many administrative commands must be performed from an SQL command line, not an OS command line).
