Europe has had five 500-year summers in 15 years

Mann co-authored a study last year that linked the slowdown in the jet stream—the band of high-altitude winds that sweep around the globe from west to east—to last summer’s unprecedented droughts, heat waves, wildfires, and flooding events across the entire Northern Hemisphere. While temperatures in Europe are nowhere near as hot as India’s current month-long heat wave—temperatures on the Asian subcontinent have reached 123°F (51°C)—most Europeans, particularly in the north, are unused to anything over 85°F. Air-conditioning remains rare. The number of heat wave days in European cities are nearly double those of the surrounding suburban and rural landscape because of the urban heat island effect, said Jürgen Kropp of PIK.

Show HN: Medical Image (Dicom) Parser in Go

This is a (hard-ish) fork of work I did at gradienthealth which built on top of go-dicom–a golang DICOM image parsing library and command line tool. We have been working on this package with the goal of building a full-featured and high-performance dicom parser in Golang with new features and improvements. So far, improvements that have made on top of go-dicom include:

To use this in your golang project, import and then you can use for your parsing needs:

More details about the package can be found in the godoc

A CLI tool that uses this package to parse imagery and metadata out of DICOMs is provided in the package.

Interns’ Job Prospects Constrained by Noncompete Agreements

Interns’ Job Prospects Constrained by Noncompete Agreements

As a junior in college, Delaney Dunne took an internship for class credit and $10 an hour at co-working company TekMountain in Wilmington, N.C.

On graduation day this year, she received a letter from TekMountain’s parent asking about her employment status and reminding her she had signed a noncompete agreement with TekMountain in November 2017 that restricted her employment options. Ms. Dunne’s noncompete agreement stated that she couldn’t work for a competitor in software or banking within 15 miles of Wilmington for a year after leaving TekMountain. Legal experts say courts tend to look favorably on agreements that protect companies’ information, but may invalidate those that restrict interns’ or employees’ free speech or movement.

How Disney built and programmed an animatronic president (2014)

An increase or decrease in voltage was used to activate the more complex types of movement in animatronic figures, according to Persistence of Vision. The harness measured voltage differences across its various joints and mimicked the changes in the animatronic figure connected to it, recording the movements to tape. The animatronic Lincoln used both types of motion, though because of maintenance and space constraints, the actual materials used to execute the necessary motions were improved between the time Disney first started developing animatronics and when the figure debuted.

Schools are using unproven surveillance technology to monitor students

The students were helping ProPublica test an aggression detector that’s used in hundreds of schools, health care facilities, banks, stores and prisons worldwide, including more than 100 in the U.S. Sound Intelligence, the Dutch company that makes the software for the device, plans to open an office this year in Chicago, where its chief executive will be based. Sound Intelligence CEO Derek van der Vorst said security cameras made by Sweden-based Axis Communications account for 90% of the detector’s worldwide sales, with privately held Louroe making up the other 10%. Schools and other customers buy microphones preloaded with Sound Intelligence’s software, and then they order a software key from Louroe or another distributor to unlock it.
