When “unicorns” like Evernote fail to make it

When “unicorns” like Evernote fail to make it

Smiling cryptically, Ian Small, the chief executive of Evernote, handed me some socks. At the peak of Evernote’s success, as part of an ambitious plan to expand from software factory to lifestyle brand, the company sold the socks and other “exceptional products that satisfy our desires for greater ease and efficiency,” like high-end scanners and backpacks made by Côte&Ciel, a French boutique. Instead, the company cycled through four chief executives, several rounds of layoffs, three office closings and the shuttering of numerous side projects, including Japanese-made smart covers for your feet.

History Will Not Be Kind to Jony Ive

History Will Not Be Kind to Jony Ive

Jony Ive, the man most often credited with Apple’s visual, industrial, and product design, is leaving the company. With Ive as Chief Design Officer, Apple released the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and various iterations of the iMac, Mac Pro, MacBook, and MacBook Pro. These design decisions extended beyond Apple: Ive’s influence is obvious in products released by Samsung, HTC, Huawei, and others, which have similarly traded modularity for sleekness.

Keybase has experimental slack to keybase team importer

Keybase has experimental slack to keybase team importer

An experimental feature to fill a Keybase team, based on your existing Slack team. Don’t worry, this page does not upload your Slack team memberships to Keybase’s servers; it’s all analyzed in your browser with JavaScript 😍

First, download your Slack team list by visiting slack.com/admin . The script will send these people (1) instructions to get Keybase, and (2) special tokens to join .

Fast.ai Part 2: Deep Learning from the Foundations

Fast.ai Part 2: Deep Learning from the Foundations

It covers many of the most important academic papers that form the foundations of modern deep learning, using “code-first” teaching, where each method is implemented from scratch in python and explained in detail (in the process, we’ll discuss many important software engineering techniques too). The first five lessons use Python, PyTorch, and the fastai library; the last two lessons use Swift for TensorFlow, and are co-taught with Chris Lattner, the original creator of Swift, clang, and LLVM. So be sure to study the notebooks to see lots more Swift tricks…

We’ll be releasing even more lessons in the coming months and adding them to an attached course we’ll be calling Applications of Deep Learning.

Red Hat Expecting X.org to “Go into Hard Maintenance Mode Fairly Quickly”

Red Hat Expecting X.org to “Go into Hard Maintenance Mode Fairly Quickly”

With the Fedora Workstation 31 feature outlook covered earlier this week, there was an interesting comment in that article by Red Hat’s Christian Schaller that deserves special coverage.A Phoronix reader pointed out the significance of one the statements in that blog post, which I hadn’t explicitly called out. So in case you didn’t read that blog post about Fedora Workstation 31, Red Hat’s Christian Schaller says it’s their belief that X.Org will soon be going into “maintenance mode” in favor of Wayland. Red Hat’s Adam Jackson has long been serving as the xorg-server release manager since Keith Packard stopped doing so when changing up his roles from Intel to HPE, etc.

VLC media player 3.0.6 and earlier: Read buffer overflow and double free

VLC media player 3.0.6 and earlier: Read buffer overflow and double free

A remote user can create some specially crafted avi or mkv files that, when loaded by the target user, will trigger a heap buffer overflow (read) in ReadFrame (demux/avi/avi. cpp) respectively

If successful, a malicious third party could trigger either a crash of VLC or an arbitratry code execution with the privileges of the target user. The user should refrain from opening files from untrusted third parties or accessing untrusted remote sites (or disable the VLC browser plugins), until the patch is applied.

US military is a bigger polluter than as many as 140 countries

US military is a bigger polluter than as many as 140 countries

If the US military were a country, its fuel usage alone would make it the 47th largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, sitting between Peru and Portugal. It’s no coincidence that US military emissions tend to be overlooked in climate change studies. Our study is based on data retrieved from multiple Freedom of Information Act requests to the US Defense Logistics Agency, the massive bureaucratic agency tasked with managing the US military’s supply chains, including its hydrocarbon fuel purchases and distribution.

The varieties of material existence (2018)

The varieties of material existence (2018)

In that technical sense, solids, liquids, and gases are all states of matter (as are superconductors, superfluids, and numerous other more exotic phases), while things like life or consciousness or universal computers are not. There are a few common mechanisms: extremizing physical quantities (black holes, Bose-Einstein condensates, superconductors); evolution (cells, higher forms of life, consciousness, many forms of technology, including the iPhone); asking fundamental questions (universal computers, Drexlerian universal constructors, the Utility Fog). So my very rough picture is that a (living) human body is a system with the following properties:

A big part of the reason this question bothers me is because I have two broad (and very different) frameworks for thinking about matter.
