New Causes of Autism Found in ‘Junk’ DNA

New Causes of Autism Found in ‘Junk’ DNA

Scientists can apply the same techniques used in the new study to explore the role noncoding mutations play in diseases such as cancer and heart disease, says study co-author Jian Zhou of CCB and Princeton. The researchers used their model to predict the impact of non-inherited, noncoding mutations in each child with autism. Noncoding mutations in many of the children with autism altered gene regulation, the analysis suggested.

The Future of Interaction

The Future of Interaction

Apple ties interactions to platforms and their associated hardware. A bold and pragmatic change that Apple is famous for: they’d be setting themselves up for the next decade of user interaction. At that point, how you interact with the device adapts:

This kind of adaptability would work across platforms – your app would behave differently when it was running in augmented reality or on a TV screen.

It’s 2059, and the Rich Kids Are Still Winning – Ted Chiang

Last week, The Times published an article about the long-term results of the Gene Equality Project, the philanthropic effort to bring genetic cognitive enhancements to low-income communities. Amid fears that we were witnessing the creation of a caste system based on genetic differences, the Gene Equality Project was begun 25 years ago, enabling 500 pairs of low-income parents to increase the intelligence of their children. Yet the 500 subjects of the Gene Equality Project are not enjoying career success that is remotely comparable to the success of the New Elite, despite having received the same protocol.

End-to-End Deep Reinforcement Learning Without Reward Engineering

End-to-End Deep Reinforcement Learning Without Reward Engineering

We have developed an end-to-end method that allows robots to learn from a modest number of images that depict successful completion of a task, without any manual reward engineering. While VICE is capable of learning end-to-end policies for solving real world robotic tasks without any engineering for obtaining rewards, it does have a limitation: it needs thousands of positive examples provided upfront in order to learn, and this could be a burden on the human user. The combined method, which we call VICE-RAQ, is able to solve real world robotics tasks with about 80 goal example images provided up front, followed by 25-75 active queries.

A controlled blaze in Utah could improve models of how wildfire smoke spreads

A controlled blaze in Utah could improve models of how wildfire smoke spreads

Starting in July, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA plan to fly research planes over more than a dozen naturally occurring wildfires in the region, collecting data on how smoke plumes rise from a blaze. (The US National Science Foundation funded research flights over about 20 wildfires that summer, to study how the smoke chemistry evolved over time; those data are still being analysed.) Just as meteorologists have improved their predictions of severe weather in recent decades, fire scientists are now trying to improve their predictions of how smoke spreads so that people can prepare themselves, says Susan Prichard, a forest ecologist at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Chess-playing neural network LC0 beats Stockfish in 100-game match

For the Superfinal, the time control is 120 minutes + 10 seconds added per move for the whole game.If an engine loses on time, the result will not be changed or the game replayed. It will adjudicate as won for one side if both playing engines have an eval of at least 10.00 pawns (or -10.00 in case of a black win) for 5 consecutive moves, or 10 plies – this rule is in effect as soon as the game starts. The deadline for engine submission is the last game of the current Division unless the programmer is given a specific deadline from the Tournament Director – the goal is to be able to start the next Division as soon as possible without any significant delay.

iPhone apps share data with trackers, ad companies and research firms

Other trackers pay the app makers, squeezing value out of our data to target ads. Three more trackers help DoorDash monitor app performance — including one called Segment that routes onward data including your delivery address, name, email and cell carrier. Apple offers a privacy setting called “Limit Ad Tracking” (sadly off by default) which makes it a little bit harder for companies to track you across apps, by way of a unique identifier for every iPhone.

I’m concerned with the move that FreeCodeCamp just pulled by leaving Medium

My bigger concerns right now are that FreeCodeCamp seems to have pulled this off in a way that likely violates the terms of their agreement, explicit or implicit, with Medium and all of the authors of their publication. All articles once posted to FreeCodeCamp’s Medium publication now redirect to articles that look like this:

I know for a fact that the author of that post did not consent to having their content moved off of Medium (where they can accrue followers, distribution, and generally partake in their initial agreement with Medium). In fact, here’s what Medium said in regards to the HackerNoon issue:

FreeCodeCamp seems to have just pulled the plug and taken everyone’s Medium content with them, to be displayed in a different context, wiping out the canonical URLS, while depriving the authors their ability to edit, delete, or manage in any way.
