Ask HN: Coping when your client is an asshole?

I’m a project manager for a ~60 person software dev firm. Ordinarily, we would have dropped the client by now and refused to put up with the end-justifies-the-means tactics, but unfortunately our company could not survive without this and a handful of other projects we have with this client. My company is actively looking for new clients so we are not beholden to this one, and my manager is apologetic and tries to run interference when she can, but I’m largely left to my own devices.

The Legacy of the Banqiao Dam Collapse (2013)

The Legacy of the Banqiao Dam Collapse (2013)

On the night of Aug 8, 1975, a line of people frantically piled sandbags atop Henan Province’s Banqiao Dam while being battered by the worst storm ever recorded in the region. A prolonged drought followed by heavy rains were the official causes of the disaster, but experts like Sichuan-based geologist Fan Xiao believed these factors were exacerbated by deforestation, mining and a binge of dam building that had occurred in the preceding years – issues that also plague Southwest China’s river valleys. “There are so many endangered dams,” Zhou Fangping from the Water Resources Department of Guangdong Province told China Economic Weekly in 2011.

How I made sure all 12 of my kids could pay for college themselves

After the first child, the school learned that we kept our promise that the kids could handle the AP classes. Our rule was to give the kids the food they hated most first (usually vegetables) and then they got the next type of food. To this day, our kids are not afraid to try different foods, and have no allergies to foods.

The realities of ‘owning’ a Japanese convenience store

The realities of ‘owning’ a Japanese convenience store

Traditionally, many franchise owners were self-employed store operators who switched their business to a convenience store, possessing the shares of the chain operator and the land where their stores are located. Seven-Eleven Japan “has forgotten the philosophy of coexistence and coprosperity with franchise stores and failed to listen to their voices,” he said, calling on the chain operator to either make up for the labor shortage or revise the stores’ business hours. In February, convenience stores’ around-the-clock service was brought into the spotlight again when a 7-Eleven franchise store in Higashiosaka, Osaka Prefecture, cut its operating hours without permission from the parent company, which the chain operator disapproved of.

World’s rivers ‘awash with dangerous levels of antibiotics’

World’s rivers ‘awash with dangerous levels of antibiotics’

Hundreds of rivers around the world from the Thames to the Tigris are awash with dangerously high levels of antibiotics, the largest global study on the subject has found. In 111 of the sites, the concentrations of antibiotics exceeded safe levels, with the worst cases more than 300 times over the safe limit. Inappropriate disposal of sewage and waste dumped straight into rivers, as was witnessed at a site in Kenya, also resulted in high antibiotic concentrations of up to 100 times safe levels.

A New Biography of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr

A New Biography of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr

In these circumstances, Budiansky’s new Oliver Wendell Holmes: A Life in War, Law, and Ideas—coming during the centennial year of Holmes’s most momentous opinion, which was a visionary dissent about free speech—is especially consequential. For 40 years, from the end of the nineteenth century to the end of the Great Depression, including Holmes’s time on the Court, a conservative majority (it did not include him) repeatedly struck down federal and state laws regulating social and economic conditions intended to improve the lives of America’s have-nots. But in this centennial year of the 1919 Holmes judicial opinion that redefined the purpose of free speech in American life, it’s illuminating to recall how he became, with Chief Justice John Marshall, one of the two most illustrious justices to serve on the Supreme Court.

Let Firefox help you block cryptominers from your computer

Cryptocurrency miners may be using your computer’s resources to generate cryptocurrency without your consent. To evade the cost of power and computing resources, people (aka “cryptojackers”) deploy cryptominers to use your system’s computing capacity to do the calculations on your dime. If an unauthorized cryptominer is using your system resources to generate cryptocurrency you may notice things like your battery power draining quickly, your fan spinning (an indication that the computer is using more resources and generating heat) or your electricity bill going up.
