On Jony Ive Leaving Apple

On Jony Ive Leaving Apple

“Jony is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple’s revival cannot be overstated, from 1998’s groundbreaking iMac to the iPhone and the unprecedented ambition of Apple Park, where recently he has been putting so much of his energy and care,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. From a product standpoint, the post-Jobs era at Apple has been the Jony Ive era, not the Tim Cook era. One thing I do know — which Cook alludes to in his statement above, and which I think was made crystal clear in Ian Parker’s extraordinary 2015 profile of Ive in The New Yorker, which is, in my opinion, the most insightful piece ever written about post-Jobs Apple — is that Jony Ive had moved beyond designing computers.

FreeDOS’s Linux Roots

FreeDOS’s Linux Roots

After discovering the power of Linux and the GNU core utilities, I wanted similar functionality on FreeDOS. I tried to replicate some basic functionality of Linux in other parts of FreeDOS, with similar commands, such as (basically the same as the Linux command) and (a simple implementation of Linux ). We’ll borrow certain Linux utilities for the FreeDOS command line, but we don’t want to turn FreeDOS into a watered-down variant of Linux.

Type inference has usability problems

Type inference has usability problems

TL;DR: Type inference is pushed by many tools and languages, but there is little evidence that it is beneficial. Many programming languages provide type inference. In fact, MSDN explains to use the explicit type “to improve the code’s readability” and to reserve using type inference for anonymous types.

IT professionals should work in a mainframe environment at some point (2015)

Things like security, control, scalability, and reliability are second nature to mainframe computer systems and applications. Well, it is because of the robust system management processes and procedures which are in place and working extremely well within every mainframe shop in the world. Mainframe systems have well-documented and enforced change management procedures that need to be followed before any software is installed into a production environment.

Building Lyft’s Marketing Automation Platform

Building Lyft’s Marketing Automation Platform

Motivation
Acquiring users at scale means making thousands of decisions each day, for each region where Lyft operates: choosing bids, budgets, creatives, incentives, and audiences; running tests; and more. And so, we created Symphony — an orchestration system that takes a business objective, predicts future user value, allocates budget, and publishes that budget to drive new users to Lyft. They have more time and energy to:
Understand our users and their interests
Ideate new ad formats, messaging channels
Form hypotheses for big shots on goals

We have many exciting ideas for the continued iterations to Symphony:
Always-on experimentation
Incorporating seasonal effects like weather time of day
Better marketplace context to inform our bidders
Intelligent segmentation personalization

With Symphony, we are achieving a higher return on our investments while saving marketer hours.
