Fujifilm’s GFX 100 – A medium format mirrorless camera

Fujifilm has just officially announced its next medium format camera, the GFX 100. Unlike Fujifilm’s prior medium format bodies, the GFX 100 features a full-size design, meaning it has an integrated vertical grip and a much larger stance than the typical mirrorless camera. In addition, the GFX 100 is the first medium format camera with phase detection autofocus, greatly improving its autofocus performance over the prior GFX models.

Air conditioner ‘in a patch’ provides portable cooling

Air conditioner ‘in a patch’ provides portable cooling

Thermoelectric systems use semiconductors to pump heat from one side of a device to the other, creating a cool zone and a hot zone. One sheet served as the hot zone, the other as the cool zone. This design conferred flexibility and insulated the hot and cold sides from each other, allowing the hot layer to dissipate its heat into the air.

The End of an Era for EasyDNS

The End of an Era for EasyDNS

That was when I started asking myself “Do we really need this huge expensive office space in the middle of Toronto’s Liberty Village tech hub?” Luckily a confluence of events have presented itself and we can move to entirely new level of lean, without replacing anybody with an AI-powered bot:

On June 30, 2019, after 18 years in the Dufferin Liberty Centre (making us the longest running tenant in the building), we are shutting down our physical office space and going completely virtual. We have the space until June 30, but if you have to mail us anything (we’re one of the few tech companies where you can still remit via cheque), you can start using our new mailing address right away:

Everything else stays the same, the phones, the email, the website, the amazing service, the clueful support, none of that changes.

Why pessimism on Social Security could come back to bite millennials

Why pessimism on Social Security could come back to bite millennials

And perhaps most important, today’s young people will need Social Security every bit as much as today’s retirees and near-retirees – and probably more so if current economic trends persist. Just this past April, the report’s release set off the predictable wave of erroneous headlines and broadcast reports stating that Social Security is “running out of money,” describing its “depleted funds” and advising people on how to prepare for a future retirement without their expected benefits. In a provocative article that he co-authored recently in the American Prospect (bit.ly/2WeWJC2), Arno takes on the root causes of the cynicism so many young people have today about Social Security and argues that Social Security should be a centerpiece policy issue for anyone interested in civil rights and social justice.

YC’s request for startups: Government 2.0

YC’s request for startups: Government 2.0

We believe this mindset is the result of increased family debt, stagnant wages, and a lack of government commitment to provide equal access to the basic services families need to thrive. Existing YC startups that fit this category include:

We want to invest in many more of them and have refreshed the Request for Startups, which are concepts we believe are important in the coming decades, to reflect this newest addition: Government 2.0. Notes

To be clear, we do not seek to replace the government and its policymakers but seek to fund startups that create solutions that provide Americans the foundations for economic growth.

After 15 Years, the Pirate Bay Still Can’t Be Killed

After 15 Years, the Pirate Bay Still Can’t Be Killed

Meanwhile, despite widespread concern that the Swedish case would cripple the site, The Pirate Bay lives today, still hosting torrents that have survived for 15 years. The Pirate Bay was initially established three years prior by the Swedish anti-copyright group Piratbyrån, and its operations were managed by Fredrik Neij and Gottfrid Svartholm Warg. (Neij also won applause across the internet for stating that he had literally tweaked Pirate Bay code and fixed a site shutdown while sitting in court during the final trial day.)

NYT Tracks Reddit Conversations Around nytimes.com Content

The project was a tool that checked Reddit for conversations around Times content and alerted the newsroom via a Slack channel. This included access to James’ Google Cloud project in order to deploy the service but also access credentials for our GraphQL service. Example posts from the new Reddit Slack serviceBy the end of the day, I was able to hook the service into Drone with our drone-gae plugin and the entire system was ready to automatically deploy on any commit to the master branch.

Yes, Coldfusion is “Unpopular”. No, I don’t care

Yes, Coldfusion is “Unpopular”. No, I don’t care

Take a gander at this worthless article by TechRepublic, citing the “Death of Ruby”:

There it is again – popularity, that moronic metric only useful in blog posts and line graphs. I had some interesting feedback on my Five Reasons to Learn CF in 2019 post from a developer who told me:

For reference, here is that Google Trends graph of “Coldfusion” searches from 2004-present which he was referring to:

My response was to link to the same Google Trends graph for HTML over the same time period. Node is an excellent language to learn, and is very powerful thanks to its immense popularity and large package ecosystem – but just remember that without the ecosystem, Node as a language would be a footnote in the annals of history.
