Google suspends some business with Huawei

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Alphabet Inc’s Google has suspended business with Huawei that requires the transfer of hardware and software products except those covered by open source licenses, a source close to the matter told Reuters on Sunday, in a blow to the Chinese technology company that the U.S. government has sought to blacklist around the world. Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system, and the next version of its smartphones outside of China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the Google Play Store and Gmail app. Huawei will continue to have access to the version of the Android operating system available through the open source license that is freely open to anyone who wishes to use it.

AMD Ryzen Mini-STX: ASRock’s DeskMini A300 – Finally

The front panel ports are the usual DeskMini affair, being a microphone input, headphone output, USB3.1 Gen 1 Type-A and USB3.1 Gen 1 Type-C. To the right, the standard STX form factor front I/O, embedded into the board, and to the top, the VRM section powering the CPU/GPU combination in the AMD APU. On the rear of the board, a giant AMD backplate, the CMOS battery,  the twin SATA power/data plugs, another NVMe-only Ultra M.2 slot, and a bunch of supporting circuitry, including a Realtek ALC233 chip for the front audio.

Impossible Foods’ next product is sausage

Impossible Foods’ next product is sausage

The sausage ingredients are only mildly different to the burger’s. Sausage meat became a viable next product in part because it shares these ingredients, according to CEO Pat Brown. It would be a first demonstration that Impossible can make a whole other meat taste similar with only minimal tweaks to its ingredients and manufacturing process.

Using an Atari ST as Unix/Linux Terminal

Using an Atari ST as Unix/Linux Terminal

For using your atari ST as a Unix/Linux terminal you will need:

An USB serial adapter looks like this:

You can just throw the CD driver away, as Linux has built-in support for these devices. On a Debian 6 (Squeeze system), which uses the sysvinit startup system, you have to edit the file /etc/inittab

Inside this file you should add a line like

This means: start a login process on the serial line ttyUSB0, of speed 19200 bits/s, where a “ansi” text terminal will connect. If the screen displays garbage characters instead of a login prompt, just unplug and replug the usb serial adapter, and wait 5 seconds for getty to relaunch a terminal line.

‘Oh, My God, Where Is This Going?’ When Computer-Science Majors Take Improv

BOSTON—Getting a computer-science degree at Northeastern University is no joke. One class was especially nerve-racking for Colin Mullaney, even more so than theory of computation or object-oriented design. “I put it off to the end,” said Mr. Mullaney, who graduated this spring with a combined degree in computer science and mathematics.

Digitization Effort Is the Latest Plot Twist for Cuban Radio Soap Operas

The Latin American Library at Tulane University is now digitizing a whopping collection of those 1960s-era programs and encouraging academic study of Cold War soaps. Library director Hortensia Calvo, who acquired the collection for Tulane, says the stories and the manner in which they were promoted to radio stations throughout Latin America reveal a nascent middle class searching for a new way to live. Tulane’s massive collection of radionovelas — more than 9,000 reel-to-reel tapes — is named after Bujones and her husband, Louis Boeri, an Italian-born American businessman who founded America’s Productions Incorporated.

A Decade of Remote Work

A Decade of Remote Work

When we did our very first summit for Screenly at the lovely Villa Lava in Croatia (a great place for company summits), it was the first time our team members got to meet each other in person, despite having worked alongside each other for years. The reason being that a number of agencies we’ve run across over the years have a small amount of talented engineers that will do the screening process and perhaps the first few weeks, and then they gradually shift the work over to a more junior person, while charging the same rate. A final word of warning for people hiring remote team members: don’t hire people who wants to join your company just because offer them to work remotely and subsequently have more flexibility.

U.S. Judge Orders “Immediate Removal” of Website Critical of Voice Lie Detector

Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) is a pseudoscientific “lie detector” marketed to government agencies by the so-named National Institute of Truth Verification (NITV) in West Palm Beach, Florida. For example, Herring convincingly shows that NITV founder “Dr.” Charles Humble’s doctoral degree was issued by an unaccredited diploma mill called “Indiana Christian University.” Herring’s website has a great deal of additional, apparently true documentation about Charles Humble and NITV that is of considerable public interest.
