‘Knitting Is Coding’ and Yarn Is Programmable in This Physics Lab

‘Knitting Is Coding’ and Yarn Is Programmable in This Physics Lab

Dr. Reis grapples with the likes of long-overhand shoelace knotting, climbing knots, basket weaving, surgical sutures, and how to pass on the art of surgical-knot craftsmanship to robots. Together, they had derived a conjecture: All knittable stitches must be ribbon knots. Back in February, Mr. Markande (who started knitting only recently for the sake of science) thought he’d found an example of an unknittable ribbon knot, using a knots-and-links software program called SnapPy.

Number go down: the single trade that crashed Bitcoin

Number go down: the single trade that crashed Bitcoin

Trading in all cryptos is very thin — clearing 5,000 BTC out of the Bitstamp order book at that time meant going from orders to buy Bitcoin at $7,800 all the way down to orders to buy at $6,178. BitMEX doesn’t exchange bitcoins for US dollars itself — it takes its BTC/USD prices from Coinbase and … Bitstamp. This is a huge and obvious incentive to manipulate the price on those two exchanges — whichever order book is thinner, so costs less to pump or dump — to win margin bets on BitMEX.

AMD Immune to MDS Vulnerabilities

AMD Immune to MDS Vulnerabilities

Meanwhile, AMD maintains that Zombieload, just like Meltdown, Foreshadow, and Spoiler before, only affects Intel processors and not any produced by AMD. Operating system- and software-level solutions to Intel’s many vulnerabilities (which even include disabling Hyper-Threading, something Intel charges extra for) reduce the performance of its processors. Consumers with Intel processors may accept these vulnerabilities so as to avoid performance penalties, but those who opted for Ryzen, Threadripper, and Epyc, are surely relieved that they can escape with their performance intact and security unaffected.

Musk to review all of Tesla’s expenses in new cost cutting plan

(Reuters) – Tesla Inc Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk told employees on Thursday that he will increase scrutiny of the company’s expenses in his latest initiative to cut costs at the electric car maker. Musk in an email to employees, seen by Reuters, said its net proceeds from the offering gave Tesla only 10 months to achieve breakeven at the rate it was burning cash in the first quarter. In April 2018, in an email sent to employees, Musk said he had instructed his finance team to “comb through every expense worldwide” to find possible cuts.

Seattle police use family DNA, latest science to identify killer 52 years later

Seattle police use family DNA, latest science to identify killer 52 years later

On Tuesday, during a meeting at SPD headquarters in downtown Seattle, Chief Carmen Best, alongside Homicide Detective Rolf Norton, turned to Chris Galvin, a surviving brother of Susan Galvin, and said that after almost 52 years, police were confident that they had identified Susan’s killer. Seattle homicide detectives reviewed the Galvin case in 2002 and submitted items associated with the victim from the crime scene to the Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory (WSPCL) for DNA analysis. On Feb. 26, SPD Homicide detectives, CSI detectives, WSPCL scientists, and the forensic anthropologist from the King County Medical Examiner’s Officer collected a DNA sample from Wypych’s remains, 32 years after he was buried, and nearly 52 years after the death of Susan Galvin.

When Women Outrun Men

When Women Outrun Men

When Alissa St Laurent set off towards the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains on a bright August morning in 2015, she was confident her intense training would be enough to finish the 125 gruelling kilometres of the Canadian Death Race. But, early in the race, as St Laurent found herself among the sinewy bodies of the lead pack, a male runner looked her over and asked if she thought she could maintain the group’s brisk pace. The University of Waterloo professor has observed the pacing of male and female runners and has noticed that, on average, men pace themselves poorly in a race, exploding from the start line, then slowing down throughout the course.

Tesla Has 10 Months of Cash to Burn Before Dying Out

Of the many unique attributes that make Tesla so interesting to follow, it’s the pace at which things move at the company that seems to stand out the most. As part Silicon Valley startup and part automaker, Tesla’s speed means it operates similar to how Facebook did when its ethos was “move fast and break things.” It’s why Tesla CEO Elon Musk was recently heard talking about the possibility of offering a car insurance product, right after the automaker got done raising another $2.3 billion by issuing bonds and stocks after its first-quarter financial report of 2019 put it on track for bankruptcy.

Boeing 737 Max Simulators Are in High Demand, But Flawed

When the Max was introduced, Boeing believed that pilots did not need experience on the flight simulators, and the Federal Aviation Administration agreed. In a tense meeting with the American Airlines pilots union after the crash, a Boeing vice president, Mike Sinnett, said he was confident that pilots were equipped to deal with problems, according to an audio recording review by The New York Times. [Before Ethiopian crash, Boeing resisted pilots’ calls for aggressive steps on 737 Max.]
