Bill Williams: The Story of a Life (2016)

Bill Williams: The Story of a Life (2016)

For a child to be born with cystic fibrosis, two carriers or full-blown sufferers — although cases of the latter having children are extremely rare, as infertility in males is an almost universal common side-effect of the disease — must be the parents. As a boy with no future and thus no need to choose a direction in life for himself, Bill learned from an early age how it felt to always have things done to him rather than doing for himself. One day whilst sitting in a doctor’s office awaiting yet another round of tests, Bill met another boy with cystic fibrosis, one who wasn’t so blessedly free of the disease’s worst symptoms as he was at the time.

Game Engine Black Books Update

Game Engine Black Books Update

After a quick survey, I ended up with three printers able to handle the Black Books peculiar dimensions. Ingram books were damaged upon arrival, the folding lacked polish, the customer service had room for improvement and more importantly, even premium colors looked washed out. If you are curious about how the Black Books were written, here is the LateX source code:

Yes, Determinists, There Is Free Will

Yes, Determinists, There Is Free Will

A free-will skeptic argues, first, that free will requires one or more properties: intentional, goal-directed agency; alternative possibilities—that it must be possible for me to do otherwise; or causal control over our actions. For instance, some neuroscientists and philosophers such as Patricia and Paul Churchland say we should understand human behavior not so much at the cognitive, psychological level where we invoke explicit mental states, goals, intentions, and purposes, but rather at a lower level of description, as the product of biophysical processes in the brain. I am quite happy to concede that free will requires intentional agency, alternative possibilities among which we can choose, and causation of our actions by our mental states.

Et in Arcadia Ego

Et in Arcadia Ego

She explained there was a house on 57th Street (Hyde Park, Chicago), with all the windows and doors open, students everywhere, people walking out with grocery bags of books. Just four months before I inherited, so to speak, the book in the picture, I had purchased this book at Powell’s Hyde Park, just down the street:

That, friends, is the only English translation ever of Sannazaro’s Arcadia. —big, big question for any fifteenth-, sixteenth-century Italian poet, but especially for somebody like Sannazaro, who sincerely loved Virgil as much as anybody ever did, even as much as Dante had, two hundred years before Sannazaro’s time.

Low-Income College Students Are Being Taxed Like Trust-Fund Babies

Low-Income College Students Are Being Taxed Like Trust-Fund Babies

WASHINGTON — A little-noticed provision in President Trump’s sprawling new tax law is treating middle- and low-income college students as if they are trust-fund babies, taxing sizable financial aid packages at a rate first established 33 years ago to prevent wealthy parents from funneling money to their children to lower their tax burdens. Higher-education leaders are calling on Congress to fix the provision, which drastically raised the tax rate on so-called unearned income for children with assets and young adults in school. Students with large financial aid packages are finding their nontuition assistance for items such as room and board taxed by as much as 37 percent, even if their family income tax rates are much lower.

Aldi, a brutally efficient grocery chain, is upending America’s supermarkets

Aldi, a brutally efficient grocery chain, is upending America’s supermarkets

New customers may be jolted at first by the experience of shopping at an Aldi, which expects its customers to endure a number of minor inconveniences not typical at other American grocery stores. And unlike other stores, where there’s a clear division of labor — runners retrieve carts, cashiers ring up customers and clerks stock shelves — Aldi employees are cross-trained to perform every function. Despite the stripped-down store experience, Aldi scores higher on customer satisfaction surveys and benefits far more from word-of-mouth marketing than Walmart and other supermarkets.

Several leading national experts on domestic and sexual violence who reviewed transcripts of Robbins’ private events said berating traumatized women and blaming them for their reactions to abuse is a dangerous strategy.

Postgres: Abusing Security Definer Functions

But even if the code is well-written, there is a danger: unqualified access to database objects from the function (that is, accessing objects without explicitly specifying the schema) can affect other objects than the author of the function intended. The attack depends on two things:

The malicious database user “ ” can simply run the following code:

The function executed with superuser permissions. But since the statement inside the function ran with superuser permissions, so did the operator function.
