Depression is increasing among Americans reaching middle age

While thoughts of suicide were slightly higher on average amongst less-educated whites than other groups, the pattern of change over time was similar. Other research has shown that whites commit suicide at a higher rate than blacks and Hispanics: according to the CDC, white non-Hispanic Americans commit suicide at around three times the rate of blacks and Hispanics, with the highest and growing toll amongst older men. In a paper published for the National Bureau of Economic Research in April, William Dow, a public health specialist, reported that suicides were lower in states that have increased the minimum wage and provided more generous credits through the EITC (earned income tax credit), a refundable tax credit for low income individuals and families.

Xi Jinping’s colleagues rejected an ‘unequal’ trade deal

To understand why China went ahead anyway, we must go back to late April, when Chinese President Xi Jinping’s schedule was packed with events in and around Beijing. Chinese Vice Premier Liu He listens as U.S. President Donald Trump speaks in the Oval Office a little more than a month ago, when a trade deal appeared to be around the corner. Not even two years ago, U.S. President Donald Trump was patting Chinese President Xi Jinping on the back.

It’s Not Just Salt, Sugar, Fat: Study Finds Ultra-Processed Foods Drive Weight Gain

Over the past 70 years, ultra-processed foods have come to dominate the U.S. diet. The study, conducted by researchers at the National Institutes of Health, is the first randomized, controlled trial to show that eating a diet made up of ultra-processed foods actually drives people to overeat and gain weight compared with a diet made up of whole or minimally processed foods. Hall says he was surprised by his findings, because many people have suspected it is the high salt, sugar and fat content in ultra-processed foods that drives people to gain weight.

Public’s Dread of Nuclear Power Limits Its Deployment

Public’s Dread of Nuclear Power Limits Its Deployment

This fear, may cause people to want less of this zero-carbon energy source in the nation’s electricity generation mix than they otherwise would, suggest Parth Vaishnav, an assistant research professor in Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Engineering and Public Policy and Ahmed Abdulla, a postdoctoral fellow of the University of California San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy,

Just how much is this sense of dread negatively affecting decision-making about nuclear about? Respondents were split into two groups: half of the sample was shown the power sources they could choose from by label (solar, natural gas, nuclear, etc.), while the other half was shown how much environmental and accidental risk the technology posed. “Despite decades of analysis focused on public attitudes about nuclear power, there remains a gulf in understanding the difference between the technology’s statistical risks and the dread it evokes,” the team wrote.

Sony and Microsoft set rivalry aside for streaming alliance

TOKYO — Sony and Microsoft, bitter rivals in the video game console wars, will team up in on-demand gaming to better compete with newcomers like Google as the industry’s main battlefield looks poised to shift to the cloud, Nikkei has learned. Outside gaming, the two companies will consider combining image sensors from Sony — which controls half the global market — with Microsoft AI technology to develop electronic “eyes” for self-driving vehicles. The Japanese company is focusing resources on areas where it can effectively use its strengths, such as games and image sensors, and becoming more open to partnerships in other fields.

Tesla’s Autopilot was engaged when Model 3 crashed into truck, report states

Tesla’s advanced driver assist system, Autopilot, was active when a Model 3 driven by a 50-year-old Florida man crashed into the side of a tractor-trailer truck on March 1st, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) states in a report released on Thursday. “From less than 8 seconds before the crash to the time of impact, the vehicle did not detect the driver’s hands on the steering wheel”

Investigators state that Banner engaged Autopilot about 10 seconds before the collision. In addition to the two fatal crashes in Florida, Tesla’s Autopilot has been involved in at least two other fatal collisions: the March 23rd, 2018 death of Wei “Walter” Huang in Mountain View, California; and the January 20th, 2016 death of Gao Yaning in Handan, China.

Bosch to be carbon neutral worldwide by 2020

Bosch to be carbon neutral worldwide by 2020

This increase in energy efficiency will save Bosch around one billion euros, thereby bringing the company’s expenditure on carbon neutrality down from around two billion to one billion euros by 2030. Reducing the carbon footprint at Bidadi and Nashik, India, with power generated on site Bosch India is pursuing carbon neutrality by tapping locally available, natural sources of energy. Bosch is part of this movement, and has already set a high standard: power sourced exclusively from the Dominica wind farm in the state of San Luis Potosí covers more than 80 percent of the energy requirements of all Bosch locations in Mexico.
