UK consumer spending growth in 2019 to be slowest in six years

UK consumer spending growth in 2019 to be slowest in six years

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain will see the slowest growth in consumer spending in 2019 in six years, piling even more pressure on retailers, EY ITEM Club forecast on Monday. “The improvement in purchasing power has meant that consumers have been significantly less affected in their spending decisions than businesses by uncertainties over the economy and Brexit,” said Howard Archer, chief economic advisor to the EY ITEM Club, which produces quarterly UK economic forecasts. Slower growth in consumer spending will add to the pressures high street retailers face from changing shopping habits and more spending moving online.

Visual Basic: Not as Shiny, Still as Viable

Visual Basic: Not as Shiny, Still as Viable

In 2017, Microsoft announced that it would begin adding new language features to C# that might never appear in Visual Basic. They know that C# is the language of choice for presentations, books, courses, and developer workshops. Whether we’ve lost something special—or finally put an old dog out of its misery—is for you to decide.

What Happens After Amazon’s Domination Is Complete? Its Bookstore Offers Clues

What Happens After Amazon’s Domination Is Complete? Its Bookstore Offers Clues

One seller of a counterfeit copy told Mr. Kelly that she had bought the book from Amazon in one of its periodic sell-offs of damaged and returned books. This has advantages for sellers — less processing is needed, so it’s cheaper — but it also explains how Amazon can unknowingly ship counterfeits despite getting stock directly from the printer. Under this arrangement, Amazon tells Antimicrobial Therapy where the customer lives, and the publisher ships the book from Sperryville.

“The Complete Paget Portfolio,” by Nicholas Utechin (Gasogene)

Edited by the eminent English Sherlockian Nicholas Utechin, “The Complete Paget Portfolio” (Gasogene) showcases — in the words of its subtitle — “Every Sherlock Holmes Illustration by Sidney Paget Reproduced Directly from ‘The Strand’ Magazine, Including the Surviving Original Artwork.” “The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes,” edited by Graeme Davis (Pegasus)
“A Taste for Honey,” by H. F. Heard (American Mystery Classics)

Last year, publishing’s debonair crime lord Otto Penzler inaugurated a uniform line of attractive hardbacks called the American Mystery Classics. Thus, in the original opening of “The Red-Headed League,” Watson drops in at Baker Street and discovers Holmes with a client.

Data-as-a-Service: Running DaaS Companies

Data-as-a-Service: Running DaaS Companies

I’ve spent the last 13 years running data companies (previously LiveRamp (NYSE:RAMP) and now SafeGraph), investing in dozens of data companies, meeting with CEOs of hundreds of data companies, and reading histories of data businesses. Data is a growing business
One of the biggest themes in the last ten years has been products that help companies use first-party data better. The three pillars of data businesses: Acquisition, Transformation, and Delivery
SafeGraph’s President and co-founder Brent Perez always likes to remind me that there are only three core things a data company does:
1) Data Acquisition2) Data Transformation3) Data DeliveryFirst pillar: Data Acquisition is about bringing in raw materials
There are lots of ways for companies to acquire data and every data company needs to be very good at least one of the ways.

An impending funding crisis threatens Zcash

An impending funding crisis threatens Zcash

The mechanism that pays out 20 percent of the block rewards to people and entities tasked with developing the coin—including the Electric Coin Company (ECC) and the Zcash Foundation—is set to disappear. But to avoid criticism, and allow the network to stay decentralized—and not under the control of just one company—the ECC can’t just make the decision on behalf of the Zcash community. The community could do a normal vote, or a one-off voting mechanism could be set up to enable coin holders to participate in a vote on the Zcash blockchain where users stake their funds for a period of time.

Sidestepping Moore’s Law

Sidestepping Moore’s Law

ASE’s FoCoS packaging technology has demonstrated that wafer-level fan-out supports heterogenous integration for multi-die, ASIC and memory integration, with the potential of reduced package costs. SE: Chiplets, fan-out and other packaging technologies enable so-called heterogeneous integration. SE: If the industry continues to use today’s interconnect technologies, like copper pillars and microbumps, what does that mean for IC packaging in advanced chip designs?
