Mr. Banks, an independent machinist and inventor in Point Richmond, California, develops novel heat engines using a peculiar alloy called Nitinol. The unwitting ancestor of the Nitinol Engine was one of a series of “nonsense machines” I’ve made over the years as presents for children — or for no particular reason.

A team with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) first heard the song of the North Pacific right whale in 2009, but they weren’t able to visually confirm what animal was making the sounds until 2017. The solar tide in an ancient Venusian ocean is simulated using a dedicated numerical tidal model. Simulations with varying ocean depth and rotational periods ranging from -243 to 64 sidereal Earth days are used to calculate the tidal dissipation rates and associated tidal torque. The results show that the tidal dissipation could have varied by more than 5 orders of magnitude, from 0.001 to 780 GW, depending on rotational period and ocean depth.

While AT&T had been deploying fiber as per a 2015 DirecTV merger condition (something the Trump FCC tried to credit to killing net neutrality), the company recently finished up those obligations, and now has returned to the default state of most US telcos: skimping on fiber upgrade investment thanks to limited competition. AT&T will promise a universe of jobs and network investment if it gets “X” (X=killing net neutrality, a tax break, eliminating consumer protections, approving a new merger, passing a law AT&T wrote), but then bails on following through.

Pitch models generally achieved a higher BLEU score with added conditioning factors, while Duration networks demonstrated the opposite trend — lower scores with added conditioning factors. The highest scoring pitch models had both chord and next chord conditioning, though models trained on the Bebop dataset seemed to generally perform better with current chord conditioning than next-chord conditioning, while models trained on the Folk dataset performed better with next-chord conditioning. While pitch models scored between .1 and .3, duration models scored from .5 to .9; that duration models with less conditioning scored higher than those with more may actually indicate that models with more conditioning generalized better, as their scores were closer to .5
