A multiplayer loneliness sim where players can only share messages in bottles

Things We Lost in the Flood is a new, free-to-play indie MMO with a brilliant twist: It’s a massively multiplayer “loneliness simulator” where each player is set adrift on a boat in a post-apocalyptic world that’s been flooded over. Created by indie developer Dean Moynihan of Awkward Silence Games (who also created the acclaimed, deeply moving game One Chance), Things We Lost was first conceived to be massively multiple storytelling game:

“The original idea was for players to find notes that I had written, to tell a short story out of order,” he tells me. Though the game has only been out for a short time, players have written over 6,000 notes to each other, running the gamut of useful to the game, to creatively discursive, to surprisingly profound:

Bone music: the Soviet bootleg records pressed on x-rays (2015)

Bone music: the Soviet bootleg records pressed on x-rays (2015)

Over the next few days, Coates found that he had stumbled upon the postwar Soviet phenomenon of “bone music” (roentgenizdat) – bootleg recordings of music pressed on to discarded x-rays that had been banned in the USSR, lest they promote insurrectionary tendencies in listeners. Although Coates had already landed on his feet by visiting St Petersburg, where records from overseas would enter the USSR through the port and be used as masters to copy music from, he was told that he would need to meet Fuchs if he wanted to get a handle on the growth of bone music in the 1950s. Coates, who is now writing a book about bone music, echoes his point: “The last time I was in Moscow, we were interviewing a guy who used to buy these bone recordings.

The C standard library function atexit is broken everywhere

The ELF specification prescribes for use as the shared library destructor mechanism:

Since there is no mention of unloading a shared library in the document, I think it’s safe to assume, that unloading was not a concern at the time of writing. You can not use anymore for shared library destructors, since these do not happen at “base process termination”, but at any time gets invoked. But Linux calls all functions of a shared library at the time of … And it seems most other OS as well.

Professional Decline Comes Sooner Than People Think

Professional Decline Comes Sooner Than People Think

Almost all studies of happiness over the life span show that, in wealthier countries, most people’s contentment starts to increase again in their 50s, until age 70 or so. One might think that gifted and accomplished people, such as the man on the plane, would be less susceptible than others to this sense of irrelevance; after all, accomplishment is a well-documented source of happiness. A study published in the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology in 2003, which charted the life satisfaction of former Olympic athletes, found that they generally struggled with a low sense of personal control when they first stopped competing.

Facebook moderators break NDAs to expose working conditions

Utley worked the overnight shift at a Facebook content moderation site in Tampa, FL, operated by a professional services vendor named Cognizant. The stress of the job weighed on Utley, according to his former co-workers, who, like all Facebook contractors at the Tampa site, must sign a 14-page nondisclosure agreement. But for the first time, three former moderators for Facebook in North America agreed to break their nondisclosure agreements and discuss working conditions at the site on the record.

Graydon Hoare Talks About Security, History, and Rust

Graydon Hoare Talks About Security, History, and Rust

Hoare graciously agreed, sharing his thoughts on everything from the state of systems programming, to the difficulty of defining safety on ever-more complex systems — and whether we’re truly more secure today, or confronting an inherited software mess that will take decades to clean up. Some of the next generation will be Rust, but that’s about all I’m expecting to see: most programs in maintenance mode don’t have the budget to be rewritten even in their original language, much less a new one. Often some people on a compiler team are doing language-design work, but that tends to taper off as the language matures.

Open Invention Network, the Linux-based patent community, exceeds 3k licensees

Thanks to the Open Invention Network (OIN), the largest patent non-aggression community in history, Linux and related open-source technologies have become mostly free of these expensive entanglements. Absent the now 3,000 strong member community of patent non-aggression that Keith Bergelt and his team at OIN have painstakingly built over the last dozen or so years, the level of open-source software innovation and unprecedented adoption rates could simply not have been achieved.” By preventing patent aggression against Linux and other free and open source software, OIN has protected our entire software ecology of research, development and commercial utilization based on sharing.
