Almost immediately after Sorek first described the phenomenon, in 2017, four independent groups — including Cheng’s and one led by structural biologist Alberto Marina at the Biomedical Institute of Valencia in Spain — set to work trying to reveal the molecular basis by which arbitrium peptides are made, sensed and acted on by phages. Working with José Penadés, a microbiologist at the University of Glasgow, UK, Marina showed that the receptor for arbitrium in the phage can interface not only with genes in the bacterium that help the virus to reproduce, but also with other, unrelated stretches of DNA. The teams — one led by phage biologist Joe Bondy-Denomy at the University of California, San Francisco, the other by CRISPR expert Edze Westra and virologist Stineke van Houte at the University of Exeter, UK — watched as viruses bombarded bacteria with specialized proteins designed to break down the cells’ CRISPR-based immune defences.

After determining the source IP of the crawler (one of the admins was experimenting with Nutch as a supplement to the wiki’s impoverished search capabilities and had authenticated the crawler using their admin credentials) and stopping the crawl we stepped back in wonder at how a major application vendor had missed such a core tenet of web application architecture…GET requests (along with HEAD, OPTIONS and TRACE methods) should have no side effects and must not change application state. If the wiki had used discrete forms for each option that POST’ed the changes for language and other settings, the crawler would not have triggered state changes.

For instance, in case the profile name has a value  , own profile JavaScript code will be uploaded and this way, it will be embedded on any Uber website page that utilizes Tealium iQ.

When we refactor our long vertical functions into helpers, we are apt to end up with wide horizontal parameter lists. Long parameter lists are difficult enough to wrangle as-is; the more parameters a function has, the more difficult it is to properly unit test. I’ve got 99 problems, give me two more Free-floating helper functions don’t just tend towards long parameter lists.

Senate Bill 1264 is bipartisan legislation that removes patients from the middle of disputes between a health insurance company and a hospital or other medical provider. “Polling shows us that the top household pocketbook concern for consumers is a surprise medical bill,” says Stacey Pogue of the Center for Public Policy Priorities, a think tank that analyzes health and economic issues in Texas.

When it comes to SLOs, the interests of the customer and the cloud provider are at odds, and so we end up with SLAs (Service Level Agreements) that tie SLOs to contractual agreements. If a provider consistently delivered service right up to the SLO limit however, it’s unlikely that customers would be very happy. Expressing available SLOs in terms of ‘nines’ also causes some issues: it hides the difference between many short outages and a few long ones, which is something many customers care about.

Researchers in Rice’s Laboratory for Nanophotonics (LANP) this week showed they could boost the efficiency of their solar-powered desalination system by more than 50% simply by adding inexpensive plastic lenses to concentrate sunlight into “hot spots.” Rice University researchers (from left) Pratiksha Dongare, Alessandro Alabastri and Oara Neumann showed that Rice’s ‘nanophotonics-enabled solar membrane distillation’ (NESMD) system was more efficient when the size of the device was scaled up and light was concentrated in ‘hot spots.’ In this week’s study, Halas, Dongare, Alabastri, Neumann and LANP physicist Peter Nordlander found they could exploit an inherent and previously unrecognized nonlinear relationship between incident light intensity and vapor pressure.
