Scientists are transplanting faeces into obese people with type 2 diabetes

A new clinical trail in Swansea will see microscopic organisms harvested from the faeces of healthy volunteers and transplanted into people with type 2 diabetes who are also obese. Researchers claim that readjusting the bacteria balance in the obese patients’s intestines could help them experience drastic weight loss and even lead to them coming off diabetes medication – saving the UK billions of pounds in healthcare costs. “We know in patients with diabetes and obesity that their gut organisms are over-efficient in extracting energy from their food, so you have a greater number of calories absorbed from a given meal than somebody who doesn’t have those conditions.
