The night parrot, Australia’s most elusive bird

Seven years later, on a 2013 trip in western Queensland with birdwatcher John Stewart, Mr Young was losing faith that he’d ever lay eyes on the night parrot. Whatever the outcome of the inquiry, almost all the scientific knowledge we have of the night parrot has followed from Mr Young’s find. After taking over the night parrot project from Dr Murphy and conducting years of his own nightly recordings, Mr Leseberg is starting to understand the different call types of the night parrot — the birds’ vocabulary.
