Three Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Designing Languages

He’s a sort of quixotic, cocksure, paladin, trying to change the way that systems programming people think about how they do what they do using – you guessed it declarative languages. During the first year of my grad studies, I went to my first conference and I told a luminary in my field that I was working on designing a programming language for distributor community, and he literally laughed me out of the room, and I was a student and this was a bunch of senior people. But I feel weird saying it, because people like us, the sorts of people who do this perverse and thankless activity of engaging in language design care enough about the world that we would like to see the world change, even if only a little bit under our influence.
