Harold Bloom: Anti-Inkling?

In fact, Bloom wrote his own fantasy novel—The Flight to Lucifer, published 40 years ago this year—in apparent response to Lindsay’s. It seems significant in this regard that, in the same chapter of Agon in which he reviews his own novel, Bloom holds up Lindsay as a counter to the fantasy writers known collectively as the Inklings: J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Charles Williams. Interestingly, C. S. Lewis admired David Lindsay and called A Voyage to Arcturus “that shattering, intolerable, and irresistible work,” a fact which Bloom avoids.
