Special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation searched the offices of lab-test startup uBiome Inc. on Friday morning, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. uBiome sells tests for the microbiome, which refers to the group of microorganisms that live in the digestive tract and other parts of the body, under names including Explorer and SmartGut. The current scrutiny of uBiome comes amid a larger debate about whether microbiome testing, as well as certain types of tests on human genes, should be considered a recreational experience paid for by interested consumers, or something clinically useful for doctors trying to treat patients and covered by health insurance.
