AI-enhanced journalism offers a glimpse of the future of the knowledge economy

In journalism, for instance, data mining systems alert reporters to potential news stories, while newsbots offer new ways for audiences to explore information. But developing it took a ton of work, both editorial and technical: Editors had to figure out what to tag and whether the algorithms were up to the task, then develop new test data sets to evaluate performance. The system relies on a stable of six journalists who find government data sets tabulated by geographic area, identify interesting and newsworthy angles, and then develop those ideas into data-driven templates.

The Ondioline

The Ondioline

The Ondioline is an electronic keyboard instrument, invented in 1941[1] by the Frenchman Georges Jenny, and is a forerunner of today’s synthesizers. Jean-Jacques Perrey continued to perform live shows with the Ondioline until his death in 2016; he featured the instrument on his Oglio Records albums with musician Dana Countryman, The Happy Electropop Music Machine (2006) and Destination Space (2008). [4] In a 2018 interview with Australia’s Broadsheet, Gotye said, “You can dial in an incredibly wide range of sounds on the ondioline, and the unique mechanics for playing it allows you to create sounds very sensitively and with a musical deftness I just feel isn’t present on most other electronic instruments from the ’40s – or decades since.”

Starshade Would Take Formation Flying to Extremes

Starshade Would Take Formation Flying to Extremes

Researchers working on ExEP’s Starshade Technology
Development, known as S5, have been tasked by NASA with developing starshade
technology for possible future space telescope missions. Get Into Formation

The specifics of a particular starshade mission –
including the exact distance between the two spacecraft and the size of the
shade – would depend on the size of the telescope. In fact, the work by Bottom and Flinois demonstrates that engineers
could reasonably meet the alignment demands of an even larger starshade (in
conjunction with a larger telescope), positioned up to 46,000 miles (74,000
kilometers) from the telescope.

An 85-year-old tech entrepreneur who made her staff millionaires

My first job had been working in computing at the Post Office Research Station in Dollis Hill where there were two pay scales – one for men and one for women. I studied for six years, taking evening classes, to gain a degree in mathematics, working my way up through my first role at the Post Office, moving to a technology firm – CDL Ltd, the designers of the ICT 1301 computer in 1959. That same year I founded Freelance Programmers and, slowly, my business started turning, even if it was against the tide – at that point, in the 1960s, women couldn’t legally drive a bus or even open a bank account without their husband’s permission.

How we tune out distractions

How we tune out distractions

When this circuit is engaged, the prefrontal cortex selectively suppresses sensory input as it flows into the thalamus, the site where most sensory information enters the brain. The researchers also found that the same circuits are employed not only for switching between different types of sensory input such as visual and auditory stimuli, but also for suppressing distracting input within the same sense — for example, blocking out background noise while focusing on one person’s voice. “This study uses a dazzling array of techniques for neural circuit dissection to identify a distributed pathway, linking the prefrontal cortex to the basal ganglia to the thalamic reticular nucleus, that allows the mouse brain to enhance relevant sensory features and suppress distractors at opportune moments,” says Daniel Polley, an associate professor of otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School, who was not involved in the research.

The Safest Place in a Car Crash Isn’t the Back Seat Anymore

The Safest Place in a Car Crash Isn’t the Back Seat Anymore

But that’s no longer certain, as advances in seatbelt technology up front have been slow to jump to the back seat. Safety researchers now have new recommendations about what to buy and where to sit, highlighting vehicles whose rear seats have the kind of sophisticated seatbelts that have protected front-seat riders for roughly a decade. If belts with this better technology aren’t available in the back seat, people 55 and older should sit in the front of newer vehicles with those more sophisticated belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
