The Matter of Time()

The Matter of Time()

Moreover, if we measure the latency by measuring the execution time, it will be way below 1 millisecond, so it’s maybe not a surprise that the answer to the first question was yes. Apparently, the time returned by this clock isn’t related to any real-world time; it can only be used to compare the timestamps within the same JVM instance, and it’s relative to an arbitrary “origin” which can be in the future, and therefore it might be negative – which answers the sixth question. Here comes the first surprise: nano time is indeed monotonic but only if the underlying operating system supports it.

Nanolaw with Daughter (2011)

Nanolaw with Daughter (2011)

On a Sunday morning before her soccer practice, not long after my daughter’s tenth birthday, she and I sat down on the couch with our tablets and I taught her to respond to lawsuits on her own. What happened is, a long time ago, the country Belgium took over this country Congo and killed a lot of people and made everyone slaves. So five months after I posted the ultrasounds, one month before my daughter was born, we received a letter (back then a paper letter) naming myself, my wife, and one or more unidentified fetal defendants in a suit.

How to Remember

How to Remember

Adam Grant took a deep dive into memory research to found a simple answer. Associative learning is the process of relating something new to something you already know — not in a Pavlov’s dog kind of way, but by learning the relationship between seemingly unrelated things. And you’ll be able to apply greater context — which will help with memory storage and retrieval — to the new information you learn.

Apple Still Eyes Intel’s Modem Business

Apple Still Eyes Intel’s Modem Business

SAN FRANCISCO — A report that Apple is in talks to acquire part of Intel’s modem chip business is likely to jumpstart speculation that Apple is laying the groundwork for designing its own modem device for use in its iPhones and other products that feature cellular connectivity. A report Tuesday by The Information, a tech news site, indicates that Apple remains in talks to buy the portion of Intel’s modem business that is based in Germany. The Wall Street Journal reported in April that Apple was in talks to buy Intel’s 5G modem business after Apple and Qualcomm struck a deal to settle all litigation between them.

Generating Combinations

Generating Combinations

On the Wikipedia page for combinatorial number systems I stumbled across Gosper’s hack which is a great little bit of code for generating all possible combinations of a bitset very quickly. The initial value should be the smallest number with K-bits set, which will just have all the lowest bits set. It returns the next combination with K of N bits set.

Drones piloted by climate-change activists target Heathrow

Heathrow tried a detection system after drone sightings shut down Gatwick airport for several days before Christmas. “You only need to have a few more drones than you have counter-measures and the drones have won the battle,” says Mr Michel. Experts advocate harsher punishments for drone operators who intrude on sensitive sites such as airports, arguing that a catastrophic accident is a matter of “when, not if”.

Klatu the Household Robot (1977)

Klatu the Household Robot (1977)

With 30 years of hindsight and research, I feel that some of that un-favorable press was based on Artificial Intelligence gurus who hadn’t achieved much with their own very large budgets, and had observed the promotional robots, not Klatu. Tony Reichelt was a promoter at heart, and was often misunderstood by members of the press; and even more so by the research industry who greatly misinterpreted Quasar’s strategy to create the “illusion” of magic with their Klatu robot. We are careful to always describe our primary interests as Robot Psychologists, employing the convenience of remotely controlled robots ad a means of satisfying both our research goals & the needs of our many audiences to work with such communications tools in totally unrestricted fashion.
