The Svalbard Global Seed Vault (Norwegian: Svalbard globale frøhvelv) is a secure seed bank on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen near Longyearbyen in the remote Arctic Svalbard archipelago, about 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) from the North Pole. The seed vault is managed under terms spelled out in a tripartite agreement between the Norwegian government, the Crop Trust and the Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen). [19][39]

The Crop Trust, officially known as the Global Crop Diversity Trust, plays a key role in the planning of the seed vault and coordinating shipments of seed samples to the Vault in conjunction with the Nordic Genetic Resource Center.

We started wanting to know \(P(H|D)\), the probability take our cup of coffee would be great given our brewing setup, which is out data \(D\). This means that rather than looking at just the probability of \(P(H|D)\) we needed to look at the odds, \(O(H|D)\) which compares the probability that the coffee is great with the probability that it’s not, \(\bar{H}\). When we transformed our odds to the \(log_{10} O(H|D) \) odds we fix this asymmetry:

So aside from giving us a nice linear way to look at our problem, framing our problem in log odds actually makes a lot of sense when we try to interpret the results!

Drone use is growing in Japan as in many other nations

Operating a drone in Japan while drunk could lead to a year in prison thanks to new legislation. As well as fines over drunken use, the legislation also levies fines on pilots who perform dangerous stunts with their drone. Anyone operating a drone in Japan does not need a licence but must abide by a series of regulations including:

staying below 150m

avoiding airports

avoiding crowded areas

only flying during daylight

keeping the drone in sight at all times

Anyone failing to abide by the established regulations could face a fine of up to 500,000 yen.

The State of New York, where many have died, told us they tried to connect us with families of people who had fallen ill, as did a Brooklyn branch of Mount Sinai Hospital. But a new study that is forthcoming in the Journal of Urban Economics finds evidence of clustering of writers in 18th- and 19th-century London, a period well before the onset of today’s knowledge and creative economy. Furthermore, being part of the London cluster increased the likelihood of an author having their work published in any given year by 24 percent. Mitchell writes:    Due to the geographic concentration of creative industries, authors in London likely had access to stronger and more advantageous social networks, in terms of increased connections with their peers (other authors), individuals with influence within the publishing industry (agents, publishers, critics), and those who are a part of the intellectual and cultural elite (artists, musicians, wealthy patrons).

Rather, the positive news lover believes that straight news isn’t just negative, but essentially fake, and positive news does more than make a reader feel good, it delivers a fundamental truth.
