Seriously, none of our current developers use Windows and bugs are piling up in our bug tracker for this platform (same can be said on macOS by the way), whereas GIMP is so enjoyably stable on GNU/Linux. As Joel Simon, director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, has observed: “Under this rubric, anyone anywhere in the world who publishes information that the US government deems to be classified could be prosecuted for espionage.”

Not all neural network architectures are created equal, some perform much better than others for certain tasks. We demonstrate that our method can find minimal neural network architectures that can perform several reinforcement learning tasks without weight training. In contrast, when we train artificial agents to perform a task, we typically choose a neural network architecture we believe to be suitable for encoding a policy for the task, and find the weight parameters of this policy using a learning algorithm.

I’ve not actually spoken to many other developers about what their user needs are. But the way Google has gone about introducing it to the world betrays a huge lack of empathy for the poor sods who have review standards, for other browsers, for users, and for the broader Web community. But Google have presented it in such an arrogant way – and with no user research – that I’m getting afraid of what they’ll do next.

The Pika CDN was built to serve the 60,000+ npm packages written in ES Module (ESM) syntax. This module syntax runs natively in the browser, so you can build for the web without a bundler. With our CDN, package authors can distribute more modern, unminified packages without worrying about how to serve them directly.

While with adults we understand that when a person says they’ll do something they mean they’ll put in a reasonable effort and may fail if the task is surprisingly difficult or if factors outside their control intervene, I find that with kids being explicit about likely failure possibilities is helpful. Similarly, adults understand that you don’t have authority over everyone around you, but with kids phrasing like “Mama can read to you when we get home” isn’t as good as “I’ll ask Mama if she’ll read to you when we get home.” The better you get at the two skills above the easier this is: you’re saying fewer things that need to be backed up, the consequences you’ve promised are ones that generally seem fair, and your kids generally understand the patterns and choose to avoid the consequences.

When consulting a book with plates (that is, inserted leaves printed separately from the text), it is best not to assume that they have been placed in the same location in all copies of the same edition nor that their location in the book reflects the one intended by the author or the publisher. By contrast, the engravings in the Frankfurt editions of this book from 1604 and 1617 were printed on separate sheets from the text and their order and placement vary from one extant copy to another. Printing images with text, like in the Paris edition of Errard’s treatise, avoided having to select their location or to ‘misbind’ them in a book; but printing intaglio images with text could be difficult and time consuming.

Susannah Stapleton’s compulsively absorbing book about Maud West centres on a woman who was a splendid one-off and yet somehow entirely of her age. Maud West, with her magnifying glass and her box of disguises, could have been a character in a Dorothy L Sayers novel – and in fact, she seemed to have lived her life as though it were a continually unfolding story, complete with cloaks and daggers. Stapleton interweaves what she has discovered about West herself with fascinating details about the new freedoms available to women and the accompanying social anxieties.
