Out of Stock: How to Survive the LTO-8 Tape Shortage

Out of Stock: How to Survive the LTO-8 Tape Shortage

Eighteen months ago, the few remaining LTO tape drive manufacturers announced the availability of LTO-8, the latest generation of the Linear Tape-Open storage technology. The lawsuit and counter-lawsuit that led to the LTO-8 shortage is a patent infringement dispute between Fuji and Sony, the only two remaining manufacturers of LTO tape media. A second option is to go ahead and buy an LTO-8 library and use LTO-7 tapes that have been specially formatted for higher capacity called LTO Type M (M8).

A Field Guide to Power Transmission Lines

A Field Guide to Power Transmission Lines

The number of energy-carrying wires on them is three or fewer (per circuit, some distribution poles carry more than one three-phase circuit) and they tend to hold other equipment on them as well, such as transformers, fuses, switches, and even telephone and cable lines. For the transmission lines, though, which handle bulk power, the voltages can be as high as 500 kV and still carry thousands of amps of current. Another advantage of steel is that it can be easier to produce structures with more than one pole (supporting the wires via a crossarm of some sort) for the largest of transmission lines.

A Failed Experiment with Python Type Annotations

A Failed Experiment with Python Type Annotations

Now, if you’re using TypeScript or C++ the compiler can happily infer the return type of functions. To use type checking, I’d have to add the redundant class declarations to every container-like class. Static type checking should not be a tradeoff and there’s no fundamental reason these limitations can’t be lifted.

‘1984’ at Seventy: Why We Still Read Orwell’s Book of Prophecy

‘1984’ at Seventy: Why We Still Read Orwell’s Book of Prophecy

It has outlasted in public awareness other contenders from its era, such as Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” (1932), Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” (1953), and Anthony Burgess’s “A Clockwork Orange” (1962), not to mention two once well-known books to which it is indebted, Yevgeny Zamyatin’s “We” (1921) and Arthur Koestler’s “Darkness at Noon” (1940). Partly it’s owing to the fact that, unlike “Darkness at Noon,” Orwell’s book was not intended as a book about life under Communism. The overt political material—such as “The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism,” the (very long) book that the commissar O’Brien gives to Winston and Julia as he lures them into the trap—is likely now skipped by many readers.

Hayabusa2 successfully dropped another target marker in anticipation of a second sample collection. With the marker now in place, the (hopefully) next step will be descending to collect a sample of Ryugu’s subsurface material from the region near where Hayabusa2’s copper impactor (fun test video) created an artificial crater in April. This must happen by the end of the month since Hayabusa2 is almost out of time—the surface of Ryugu will soon become too hot for a collection attempt as the asteroid approaches perihelion.

How to tame an ornithopter

How to tame an ornithopter

While jet propulsion still lay far beyond the horizon , inventors were brainstorming ways to apply raw human strength and replicate the prototypes found in nature — namely the wings of birds and insects. Volodymyr Yakovenko has not heard of any other inventors working on ornithopters in Ukraine. About five years ago, he was in touch with a group of Russian inventors and corresponded with the Canadians famous for the longest ornithopter flight in history.
