In this form, the study is one of a kind in the world, as Axhausen explains: “Previous simulations mostly assumed ideal conditions, such as that every road user opts for an automated taxi provided waiting times are below a certain level.” In a simulation with some 150,000 agents representing 10 percent of Zurich road users, “automated public transport” – including self-driving buses, rail and taxis – achieved more than 60 percent of total transport. In the simulation, private driverless cars appear so attractive that they even increase volume on the roads: Axhausen’s virtual agents travelled up to 250,000 additional kilometres per day in automated private vehicles.

Since “openSUSE” contains “SUSE”, the company will have to retain a significant amount of control over what the foundation can do with its own name, which “makes such things rather complicated”. Michal Kubecek worried that a renamed openSUSE would become “Yet Another Linux Distribution”; the Fedora project, he said, suffered from its name change.

I was being simultaneously bombarded by an unprecedented level of emails, tweets, phone calls and every other imaginable channel due to the huge attention HIBP was getting around the world, and also turning things off, sitting by a little fireplace in the snow and enjoying good drinks and good conversation. All of this was going on at the same time as me travelling the world, speaking at events, running workshops and doing a gazillion other things just to keep life ticking along. I made various changes to adjust to the workload, perhaps one of the most publicly obvious being a massive decline in engagement over social media, especially Twitter:
Up until (and including) December last year in that graph, I was tweeting an average of 1,141 times per month (for some reason, Twitter’s export feature didn’t include May and June 2017 and only half of July so I’ve dropped those months from the graph).

Following the introduction of new amateur radio digital modes and the resulting overlapping with the Olivia calling frequencies on some amateur radio bands, US radio amateur Tomas Hood NW7US consulted the members subscribed to an Olivia MFSK users newsgroup and created a new list of calling frequencies in November 2017. The Olivia transmission system is constructed of two layers: the lower, modulation and forward error correcting (FEC) code layer is a classical multiple frequency-shift keying (MFSK) while the higher layer is a forward error correcting code based on Walsh functions. This way, if one symbol (tone) becomes corrupted by the noise, only one bit of every 64-bit vector becomes corrupt, thus the transmission errors are spread uniformly across the characters within a block.

Apple is making corporate ‘BYOD’ programs less invasive to user privacy

This new MDM (mobile device management) enrollment option is meant to better balance the needs of IT to protect sensitive corporate data and manage the software and settings available to users, while at the same time allowing users’ private personal data to remain separate from IT oversight. The new user enrollments option for MDM has three components: a managed Apple ID that sits alongside the personal ID; cryptographic separation of personal and work data; and a limited set of device-wide management capabilities for IT. Apple also noted that one of the big reasons users fear corporate BYOD programs is because they think the IT admin will erase their entire device when the enrollment ends — including their personal apps and data.

I wanted to write one both in Common Lisp and Ada 2012, each, but found the available networking libraries distasteful, as they mimic BSD Sockets or have other flaws. The thought of Doug McIlroy and Donald Knuth writing a program accomplishing the same task in sh and Pascal came to mind; as expected, this sh program is not elegant, far too lenient, wildly inefficient, and has other major flaws. A fool may believe this launching of ten processes to service a single request is elegant in the same way the aforementioned fool would think McIlroy’s program was decent, however.

Amazon to shut down its Amazon Restaurants business in the U.S.

Amazon will shutter its Amazon Restaurants food delivery service in the U.S. later this month, GeekWire has learned. This move comes less than a month after Amazon led a $575 million funding round for Deliveroo, a U.K.-based food delivery company. Forbes called Uber Eats the company’s “secret gold mine” and on the company’s earnings call last month, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi called food delivery “a huge category” and said it could eventually be larger than the ride-hailing business.

The time has come to retire some of our old friends: a number of Backblaze Storage Pods that have reached their end of service in our data centers. Specs: These are a mix of Storage Pod 2.0 and Storage Pod 3.0 chassis with most of the components included (except for hard drives, including boot drives). We can’t guarantee that the components aren’t nearing the end of their life, but these pods should be in decent working order (and if they aren’t what a fun tinkering project!)

The current products that AMD has announced that have Zen 2 cores include the Ryzen 3rd Generation consumer CPUs, known as the Ryzen 3000 family, and AMD’s next generation enterprise EPYC processor, known as Rome.
