Venus is Earth’s evil twin – and space agencies can no longer resist its pull

Garvin, the chief scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, is the principal investigator on a proposed mission to Venus that would drop a probe through its atmosphere. It is a crucial question now that astronomers have uncovered thousands of planets outside our Solar System — many of which are rocky worlds that orbit their stars at distances similar to those of Venus and Earth from the Sun. That is why Suzanne Smrekar, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, has her eye on Venus — especially some spots that look eerily similar to locations on Earth where subduction is happening now.

Why the “Digital Ocean killed my company” incident scares the hell out of me

Why the “Digital Ocean killed my company” incident scares the hell out of me

Their cloud hosting company Digital Ocean had just locked their account and made it clear that this was permanent. Consequently, that is the whole reason you are using a cloud service like Digital Ocean. The risk factor is higher, but probably more due to the company folding because of typical startup reasons —money, fights, egos, fatigue — than because of infrastructure lock-out.

Dad, Are We Rich?

Dad, Are We Rich?

A household wealth level at the 97.5 percentile ($1.36M) is achievable for the average U.S. physician. That income is less than 80% of the average U.S. household income. Thorp also used the Forbes 400 list and Vilfredo Pareto’s “power law” to estimate the number of U.S. households at each wealth level.

Manned Orbiting Laboratory

Manned Orbiting Laboratory

The Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL), originally referred to as the Manned Orbital Laboratory, was a never-flown part of the United States Air Force’s human spaceflight program, a successor to the cancelled Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar military reconnaissance space plane project. MOL evolved into a single-use laboratory, with which crews would be launched on 40-day missions and return to Earth using a Gemini B spacecraft, derived from NASA’s Project Gemini. The Gemini no.2 capsule used in the only flight of the MOL program is on display at the Air Force Space & Missile Museum at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Breast MRI in cancer survivors results in more unneeded biopsies

Adding MRI to mammography screening for breast cancer detects more cancers, but results in more unnecessary biopsies, according to a June 4 study published in Radiology. In fact, over the seven year study, breast MRI detected 2.6 more cancers per 1,000 exams compared to mammography among breast cancer survivors. “Evidence about breast MRI’s benefits and harms in breast cancer survivors is lacking,” added co-author Karla Kerlikowske, MD, a professor of medicine and of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco, in a prepared statement.

The Mystery of Fogbank (2009)

The Mystery of Fogbank (2009)

The refurbishment of the aging W76s has taken much longer than was originally anticipated because once the engineers cracked open the old warheads they encountered a substance codenamed “Fogbank.” The Oak Ridge site sprang from the original Manhattan Project and became one of the seven facilities making up America’s nuclear weapons complex (an ominous-sounding phrase coined by the government, and gleefully seized on by the antinuclear left). Because Fogbank was manufactured at Oak Ridge, it most likely functions as an “interstage” in the warhead: a substance that surrounds the fission and fusion portions of the weapon and channels energy from one to the other.

Bottle of Lies

Bottle of Lies

These inspections were seldom surprises, because the State Department, valuing good relations over good drugs, asked the F.D.A. to give plants several weeks’ notice. Some plants even built, just for these inspections, fake production and testing areas that were kept pristine while the drugs were made in substandard conditions elsewhere. At the same time, even brand-name companies are increasingly hiring poorly regulated Indian and Asian plants to make their ingredients or formulations — just as the generic industry is being prosecuted for price-fixing.
