Show HN: CodeSpeak, the beginnings of a web-based speech-to-code tool

The live version of CodeSpeak can be found at https://codespeak.io – or you can clone this repository and run it locally. As I said, CodeSpeak is in its embryonic stage. Right now it only supports Python, and only has a limited number of commands:

More commands and functionality coming soon, promise!

Zuckerberg and Sandberg will defy Canadian subpoena, risking contempt vote

The decision could result in the executives being held in contempt of parliament, the senior Canadian politician who sent the summons told CNN. Both executives received formal requests from the Canadian Parliament earlier this month tied to a gathering of an international committee examining Silicon Valley’s impact on privacy and democracy. “Collectively we represent about 450 million people, it’s a bigger population group than the US,” Bob Zimmer MP, the chair of the Canadian parliamentary committee hosting the international meeting, told CNN Monday.

Handy Keymaps in Vim

Handy Keymaps in Vim

In this post I’m going to go over some useful keymaps and functions you can use in Vim to boost your text editing abilities and to master the Vim wizardry. First and foremost, the leader key is a special key in Vim that with other combinations of keys can be mapped to perform certain functions. You only need to type the replacement pattern and press the Enter key to actually replace the text:

Next is a function that is found in many modern text editors, that is, auto closing tags.

A comparative study of leather hardening techniques (2018)

A comparative study of leather hardening techniques (2018)

Several methods mentioned here were tested [PDF warning]:

The Waterer discussion, source of the “stearic acid” technique(s)

The Turner paper, source of the gelatin technique(s)

You may want to read those in full before continuing to familiarize yourself with common leather hardening techniques. I ended up with consistently sized and shaped leather samples well suited to the coming test methods. Instead of a completely untreated piece of leather, I needed a sample without significant hardening that could still maintain the domed shape required for certain tests.

There Is Too Much Stuff

But when you type hangers into Amazon’s search box, the mega-retailer delivers “over 200,000” options. On the first page of results, half are nearly identical velvet hangers, and most of the rest are nearly identical plastic. Even if you have very specific hanger needs and preferences, there’s no obvious choice.

‘American Soil’ Is Increasingly Foreign Owned

‘American Soil’ Is Increasingly Foreign Owned

They are also words that can’t be be taken for granted, because today nearly 30 million acres of U.S. farmland are held by foreign investors. “Texas is kind of a free-for-all, so they don’t have a limit on how much land can be owned,” say’s Ohio Farm Bureau’s Ty Higgins, “You look at Iowa and they restrict it — no land in Iowa is owned by a foreign entity.” Huffman says she’s worried about the effects of foreign land ownership on her rural community — which she describes as similar to Walmart pushing local businesses out of the market.

What I Learned Trying to Secure Congressional Campaigns

What I Learned Trying to Secure Congressional Campaigns

This article is specificaly about campaign security, or how to keep candidates and their staff and families safe from people trying to break into social media, read their email, or wire their campaign war chest to Nauru. Putting aside the urge to fix these broken systems long enough to help people get work done is the great unsolved problem of campaign security. A few weeks before each election, the campaign staffs up, and you have people like field directors and volunteer coordinators come in, in addition to the many volunteers themselves.

Text rendering rendering using multi channel signed distance fields

Text rendering rendering using multi channel signed distance fields

This is a utility for generating signed distance fields from vector shapes and font glyphs, which serve as a texture representation that can be used in real-time graphics to efficiently reproduce said shapes. If you choose to use this utility inside your own program, there are a few simple steps you need to perform in order to generate a distance field. Using a multi-channel distance field generated by this program is similarly simple to how a monochrome distance field is used.

InNative: Run WebAssembly Outside the Sandbox at 95% Native Speed

InNative: Run WebAssembly Outside the Sandbox at 95% Native Speed

inNative is an AOT (Ahead-Of-Time) compiler for WebAssembly using LLVM with a customizable level of sandboxing. inNative also lets you write C libraries that expose themselves as WebAssembly modules, which would make it possible to build an interop library in C++. WebAssembly isn’t just a way to run C++ in a web browser, it’s a chance to reinvent how we write programs, and build a radical new foundation for software development.

Some bad news for DANE and DNSSEC

Some bad news for DANE and DNSSEC

Not only is this highly inappropriate writing style, but it disrespects all the people who work on x509 and the work that has actually gone into making x509 secure. Today, because of efforts by many companies for certificate transparency is issuance, hsts for dynamic pinning, pinning of other roots, and more, x509 protects more people every day than any other technology on the planet. I think this is really deceptive, misleading and inappropriate, and would ask you to change it please.
