The Antonine Wall was the real final frontier of the Roman Empire

“A combination of pressures elsewhere in the empire, less receptive locals, challenging terrain and environmental conditions probably contributed to Rome’s decision to withdraw from the Antonine Wall and re-garrison the previous frontier at Hadrian’s Wall,” she said. The Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow, Scotland’s first public museum, hosts a permanent exhibition on the Antonine Wall, displaying treasures from everyday items, such as ancient leather shoes, jewellery and coins, to carved distance stones, which marked the completion of sections as it was built. Indeed, the park, which surrounds the museum at Callendar House, hosts a generous portion of the rampart and ditch, and provided me with my first excitable glimpse of the Antonine Wall.

An x86 Assembler in 256 LOC (2017)

Each function in our API takes a pointer , writes the byte(s) of machine code for a single assembly language instruction to memory starting at that address, then returns a pointer to the next byte after the instruction that was just assembled. The following program illustrates how to assemble this sequence of three instructions, then write the byte values of the resulting machine code to standard output:

When you run this, the output is:

Now, we’ll start implementing this API. All of these instructions have a similar encoding: an opcode byte (that differs from one instruction to the next – hence the name, “operation code”), followed by a single byte indicating the source and destination registers.

What’s striking about these early applications is that they had already worked out many of the features we associate with later browsers. No, Pei Wei didn’t play the viola, “it just happened to make a snappy abbreviation” of Visually Interactive Object-oriented Language and Application, write James Gillies and Robert Cailliau in their history of the World Wide Web. Canva security breach: hacker claims to have stolen the data of 139M users

Data for roughly 139 million users has been taken during the breach, according to the hacker, who tipped off ZDNet. With today’s hack, GnosticPlayers has now stolen over one billion user credentials, a goal the hacker told ZDNet in previous interviews he was aiming for. Previous coverage of GnosticPlayers’ hacks:
– Round 1 + Round 2 [620 million + 127 million user records]
– Round 3 [93 million user records]
– Round 4 [26.5 million user records]
– Round 5 [65.5 million user records]

Ask HN: How can I work towards building a company while employed?

Ask HN: How can I work towards building a company while employed?

– continue learning while on the job – prepare for interviews so that I can apply to companies that are friendly to side projects (stripe, gitlab, github and a bunch of other such companies. Please mention companies that are ok with remote workers and are side project friendly, even startups paying $30,000 work for me) – build side projects in my free time that demonstrate my skills – maybe participate in Pioneer.app tournaments so I can network – basically work on stuff that won’t become a company – once I get a job at a more side project friendly company, I’ll start working on my ideas. As you can see, it’s quite a shitty situation to not be able to pursue my side projects that could become companies, but it is what it is and I want to make the most of the next year or so.

How we found the source of the mystery signals at Parkes Radio Telescope (2015)

How we found the source of the mystery signals at Parkes Radio Telescope (2015)

When astronomers look for pulses from astrophysical sources (like pulsars or FRBs) we use a few key features to tell the real signals apart from the noise of radio devices on Earth. The RFI monitor data, which hadn’t been available for previous peryton discoveries, revealed something important: at the time of each peryton event, there was also a period of radio emission at the frequency 2.5 GHz, out of the range we were observing with the telescope. We found that we could generate perytons in our data by simply having a direct line of sight between the microwave oven and the telescope receiver (without the telescope surface itself in the way) and stopping the microwave oven by opening the door.

Ask HN: Should I quit my job?

I also work on the afternoons on a side project that is making close to $100/m However, my day job is draining all my energy in a way that I am grumpy from Sunday night to Saturday morning. I wake up at 6:20, commute 45 minutes, work 8h, commute 45 minutes, arrive home at 18:00 and then I try to squeeze time for my side project, going to the gym, making groceries, hang out with my gf, etc. Should I quit my job and work on my stuff or search for another position that would give more motivation?

Huawei reviewing FedEx relationship, says packages ‘diverted’

Huawei reviewing FedEx relationship, says packages ‘diverted’

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei is reviewing its relationship with FedEx Corp after it claimed the U.S. package delivery company, without detailed explanation, diverted two parcels destined for Huawei addresses in Asia to the United States and attempted to reroute two others. Huawei told Reuters on Friday that FedEx diverted two packages sent from Japan and addressed to Huawei in China to the United States, and attempted to divert two more packages sent from Vietnam to Huawei offices elsewhere in Asia, all without authorization, providing images of FedEx tracking records. The two packages sent on May 19 and May 20 from Tokyo, intended for Huawei in China, ended up in Memphis, Tennessee, the headquarters of the U.S. company, by May 23, according to images of FedEx tracking records shown to Reuters by Huawei.
