Faire (YC W17) Is Looking to Hire Senior Front End Engineers in Kitchener

Faire is changing wholesale and helping local retailers compete with Amazon and the big box stores. Economic data shows: compared to the big box stores, local retailers are flourishing because they offer a better shopping experience. Our goal at Faire is to rethink the wholesale model with an online marketplace that makes it easy for retailers and makers to connect and succeed together.

Power Is Overrated

Power Is Overrated

I would define power as the ability to make other people do what you want; freedom is the ability to do what you want. Freedom is the defensive, or pre-emptive, form of power: the power that’s necessary to resist all the power the world attempts to exert over us from day one. Though to be honest, even this seemingly innocuous form of ambition serves an insidiously dictatorial desire: to change what other people think, and how they see.

We found the source of the mystery signals at Parkes Radio Telescope (2015)

We found the source of the mystery signals at Parkes Radio Telescope (2015)

When astronomers look for pulses from astrophysical sources (like pulsars or FRBs) we use a few key features to tell the real signals apart from the noise of radio devices on Earth. The RFI monitor data, which hadn’t been available for previous peryton discoveries, revealed something important: at the time of each peryton event, there was also a period of radio emission at the frequency 2.5 GHz, out of the range we were observing with the telescope. We found that we could generate perytons in our data by simply having a direct line of sight between the microwave oven and the telescope receiver (without the telescope surface itself in the way) and stopping the microwave oven by opening the door.

Canva suffers security breach: hacker claims data stolen of 139M users

Data for roughly 139 million users has been taken during the breach, according to the hacker, who tipped off ZDNet. With today’s hack, GnosticPlayers has now stolen over one billion user credentials, a goal the hacker told ZDNet in previous interviews he was aiming for. Previous coverage of GnosticPlayers’ hacks:
– Round 1 + Round 2 [620 million + 127 million user records]
– Round 3 [93 million user records]
– Round 4 [26.5 million user records]
– Round 5 [65.5 million user records]

Why is chicken so cheap? [video]

Why is chicken so cheap?

Free-range birds have more access to open air runs, while organic chickens are typically free from antibiotics, hormones and other synthetic chemicals. Free-range chickens get the most access to open air runs but when it comes to living space, organic and free-range fair far better than intensively reared birds where as many as 17 adult birds live in a single square metre. Organic farming might offer animals a greater quality of life but consumers are largely driven by cost and in an average UK supermarket, an intensively reared chicken cost several times less than its free-range or organic cousins.

Microsoft, Brilliant team up to offer quantum curriculum

Microsoft, Brilliant team up to offer quantum curriculum

In partnership with Microsoft’s quantum team, Brilliant has launched an interactive course called “Quantum Computing,” for learning quantum computing and programming in Q#, Microsoft’s new quantum-tuned programming language. Using Q#’s new Python integration within the Brilliant course, students call Python to implement the classical side of an algorithm and call Q# to run the quantum side—all in a single coding environment in their browser. Q#’s integration with Python provides a glimpse into the future of quantum computing: a classical computer that can leverage quantum hardware for particular problems, in much the same way that we currently use GPUs to speed up the solutions of ray tracing or machine learning problems.

The Enderby Shield

The Enderby Shield

In 2015, archaeologists from University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) found a unique artefact, a 2,300-year-old bark shield, during an excavation on the Everards Meadows site south of Leicester. Refurbished Samsung Android Phones Sans Google Now Available

As with many devices and services today, however, privacy is one of the concerns people may have with Google, which admittedly keeps track of people’s use of their services. Enter /e/ OS, a new mobile OS that, according to Android Authority, is like Android sans Google and its habit of capturing user data for whatever purpose it might have. Those who don’t know how to flash, or don’t want to send their devices to be flashed, or are simply looking for a new phone but don’t want iOS and the data capturing methods of Google on Android devices can revel in the fact that the /e/ Foundation is selling refurbished Samsung flagships running on /e/ OS.

Knowledge Extraction from Unstructured Texts (2016)

Knowledge Extraction from Unstructured Texts (2016)

OpenIE (Open Information Extraction) is a tool that filters and normalizes raw text between entities to obtain open-domain relations. Distant supervision, also called weak supervision, is when we wish to extract relations from a text and that an initial KG is available, as a seed, for the triplet extraction task. If we have a lot of texts and a big enough KG (with the same entities as the ones in the texts) we can learn a mapping from raw text to fixed-schema relations of the KG.

Moving a 320 year old house across an ocean from Japan to California

Moving a 320 year old house across an ocean from Japan to California

The wooden structure survived the firebombing campaigns of Japanese cities during World War II and will soon be leaving its longtime home to become part of the famed Japanese Garden at California’s Huntington Library. Their home became the legislative hub of the village and will now become a portal for Huntington visitors to see what life was like centuries ago in Japan. Along with the house, the Huntington will also receive the home’s kura, a storehouse for the village’s rice and grain.
