Scientists discover China has been secretly emitting banned ozone-depleting gas

Now, in a new study published in Nature on May 22, scientists from the University of Bristol, Kyungpook National University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that between 40 and 60 per cent of total global CFC-11 emissions originate from eastern China. The Chinese government has been cracking down on illegal CFC-11 manufacturers and shutting down production facilities and Rigby hopes this new study will help law enforcement officials in their search for illicit producers. Due to the limited locations of their monitoring network, Rigby said the study team cannot conclusively determine where the rest of the CFC emissions are coming from, pointing out they have no information on regions such as South America, western China and India.

Weight initialisation
Hyperparameter setting
Model fitting/fine-tuning
Other improvements

Transfer learning
Model weights can either be (i) randomly initialised, or (ii) transferred from a pre-trained model in a process called transfer learning. So increasing the learning rate at the start helps the model to jump out away from that trench, explore the function surface and try to find areas where the loss is low and the region is not bumpy (because if it’s bumpy, it gets kicked out again). EU plans first satellite fleet to monitor CO2 in every country

EU plans first satellite fleet to monitor CO2 in every country

Europe is readying a new fleet of satellites that will monitor CO2 emissions at every point on earth, creating the first worldwide system to independently track polluters. The fleet of three satellites is slated for launch in 2025, in time to inform the UN’s global stocktake of greenhouse gas emissions three years later, the European Space Agency (ESA) confirmed to Climate Home News. A recent review of the science of inventories noted that satellites “could potentially be used to validate the emissions reported [by power stations and other major sources] for a certain time period”, said Blain.

Antonio Salieri’s Revenge – Falsely Cast as Mozart’s Murderer

Antonio Salieri’s Revenge – Falsely Cast as Mozart’s Murderer

A German-language biography of Salieri, by the composer and musicologist Timo Jouko Herrmann, was published earlier this year. Lorenzo Da Ponte, the master librettist of “The Marriage of Figaro,” “Don Giovanni,” and “Così Fan Tutte,” heaped praise on Mozart’s music in his memoirs, but his evocation of Salieri’s personality was fonder in tone: “a most cultivated and intelligent man . . . whom I loved and esteemed both out of gratitude and by inclination . . . more than a friend, a brother to me.” Of the early Salieri operas that have returned to circulation, perhaps the finest is “La Scuola de’ Gelosi” (“The School of the Jealous”), which was first heard in Venice in 1778 and which conquered Vienna in 1783.

Why We’re Switching to gRPC

Why We’re Switching to gRPC

When you create a new gRPC service, the first step is always to define the interface in a file. With this file, you can then generate client and server code using the compiler, and you can start writing code that provides or consumes the API. Although building gRPC APIs requires a bit more work upfront, we found that having clear API specifications and good support for streaming more than makes up for that.

We should opt into data tracking, not out of it, says DuckDuckGo CEO

We should opt into data tracking, not out of it, says DuckDuckGo CEO

DuckDuckGo offers a privacy-minded search engine that has about 1 percent of the search market share in the US (Google’s share is more than 88 percent), as well as a free browser extension for Firefox and Google Chrome that blocks ad networks from tracking you. But there’s been no real proof that that is really better, and it’s arguably way worse for the publishers who then have ceded all sorts of money to Facebook and …

Talk about that shift to behavioral advertising, because when you did it … Years ago, at Google, also there used to be a ticker that used to run across when you entered Google about what people were searching for at that moment, and they stripped it of dirty stuff, which was quite a bit, apparently. Slowly, publishers ceded some of their page over to it, and then Google ended up having all this behavioral data, so if you searched for something, you could then follow people around with that search.

Alexa, what are you doing with kids’ data?

Alexa, what are you doing with kids’ data?

A new CCFC investigation has revealed deeply troubling findings about Amazon’s Echo Dot Kids, including that Amazon keeps children’s data even after parents try to delete it. Today, a coalition of 19 consumer and public health advocates led by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) and the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD) called on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate and sanction Amazon for infringing on children’s privacy through its Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition. “We spent months analyzing the Echo Dot Kids and the device’s myriad privacy policies and we still don’t have a clear picture of what data is collected by Amazon and who has access to it,” said Angela Campbell, a CCFC Board Member and Director of IPR’s Communications and Technology Clinic at Georgetown Law, which researched and drafted the complaint.

The multi-armed bandit problem (2012)

The other 90% of the time, we choose the lever that has the highest expectation of rewards. After many more visits, the best choice, if there is one, will have been found, and will be shown 90% of the time. In the epsilon-first strategy, you can explore 100% of the time in the beginning and once you have a good sample, switch to pure-greedy.

Some business schools are shutting down their on-campus MBA programs

Some business schools are shutting down their on-campus MBA programs

The University of Illinois’ Gies College of Business has become the latest school to announce that it is getting out of the full-time, on-campus MBA market. A greater number of shorter, cheaper alternatives to a two-year, full-time MBA program, from one-year and online options to specialty master’s degrees in such subjects as data analytics and entrepreneurship. So while more schools are expected to drop their full-time, on-campus MBA experiences, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that alternative business programs are growing and will continue to grow.
