Syntax highlighters are wrong (2014)

Only we humans get to judge which changes are good and which are bad, but during code review, the diff viewer is constantly subtly trying to influence our judgment. I have showed how these judgments are made by our existing code highlighting themes: comments are hidden as unimportant, and deletions are displayed as errors. Further, I demonstrate that the judgments made by our existing color themes are the polar opposite of those that we wish to convey: comments are important, and deletion is neither dangerous nor improper.

The Root Bridges of Cherrapunji

The Root Bridges of Cherrapunji

Root bridges have also been made by creating scaffolds out of wood and bamboo, and then training the young roots out across these temporary structures, replacing the more perishable elements many times as they rot in the intense monsoon seasons. The root bridges can grow for as long as the organism they are a part of remains healthy, though they can take many years to initially become functional, the length of time being dependent on local conditions such as the health of the tree, the way the bridge is being grown, and the availability of nutrients in the soil that its being grown in. In fact, because they are alive and still growing, the bridges actually gain strength over time—and some of the ancient root bridges used daily by the people of the villages around Cherrapunji may be well over 500 years old.

Joe Beef and the Excesses of Restaurant Culture

Joe Beef and the Excesses of Restaurant Culture

The cabin was an inspiration for “Joe Beef: Surviving the Apocalypse,” McMillan’s second cookbook with Frédéric Morin, his partner in five Montreal restaurants, including Joe Beef. Joe Beef, which opened in 2005, is McMillan and Morin’s first and best-known restaurant. Chang has called Joe Beef his favorite restaurant in the world; both he and Bourdain, another fan, became friends of McMillan and Morin.

How NOT to get a $30k bill from Firebase

How NOT to get a $30k bill from Firebase

This meant that if there were 100 donations, the application would make a call to the database once but the actual act of reading would equate to 100 times twice — once for the values required to calculate the total and second time for the number of supporters — totaling 200 read request. When the number of supporters started to hit the thousands and page views climbed to more than 2 million, it became very easy for read requests to the database to reach billions. The Colombian startup would have faced database connections maxed out issues or something similar even if they went with a traditional cloud hosted solution instead of Firebase.

The EU Should Adopt ‘EU English’ as Its Official Working Language

The EU Should Adopt ‘EU English’ as Its Official Working Language

Here’s Why

The UK’s bewildering decision to leave the European Union, the so-called Brexit, has so many unimaginable ramifications that for decades UK and EU citizens will keep discovering new ones, and the fate of the English language, including the likely rise of “EU English”, is just one of them. The fact of the matter is that, with the British voluntarily out of the picture,

the European Union must formally adopt its own form of English as its official working language:

EU English, European English, or European American English, if you please. The pros of such a wise policy move – the EU adopting its own kind or brand of the English language – will be manifold:

It will finally give all Europeans an official working language that is nobody’s mother tongue (nobody in EU 27 will be “a native English speaker”, well, except for Ireland and Malta, but they are both enough of a special case).

On SQS

You can even just ignore them; there are people who’ll dump a few million messages onto a queue and almost never retrieve them, except when something goes terribly wrong and they need to recover their state. The proportion of services I work on where queues are absolutely necessary rounds to 100%. With a whole bunch of heroic work, we might be able to cram together all these services into a smaller number of packages, but I’d be astonished if that were a cost-effective piece of engineering.

Why is the ‘race to 5G’ a race?

Why is the ‘race to 5G’ a race?

Everyone — the wireless industry, Democrats, Republicans, the major media, you name it — frames the building of next-generation 5G networks as a “race” in which the United States needs to demonstrate “leadership.” The other main argument for winning the “race” to 5G is that having the world’s best and fastest networks will create new economic opportunities for businesses of all kinds — we’ll enable self-driving cars and telemedicine and all the other stuff you hear about during interminable 5G slideshows at trade conferences. The “race” is to there to make serious trade-offs seem worth it so we can “win”

And once the “race” to build out 5G in big cities is “won,” the pressure to expand access to other places in the country will vanish, making that divide even worse.

Ask HN: I want to build a company, how to work towards the goal while employed?

Ask HN: I want to build a company, how to work towards the goal while employed?

– continue learning while on the job – prepare for interviews so that I can apply to companies that are friendly to side projects (stripe, gitlab, github and a bunch of other such companies. Please mention companies that are ok with remote workers and are side project friendly, even startups paying $30,000 work for me) – build side projects in my free time that demonstrate my skills – maybe participate in Pioneer.app tournaments so I can network – basically work on stuff that won’t become a company – once I get a job at a more side project friendly company, I’ll start working on my ideas. As you can see, it’s quite a shitty situation to not be able to pursue my side projects that could become companies, but it is what it is and I want to make the most of the next year or so.

New York City turns to dry ice to control its rat population

New York City turns to dry ice to control its rat population

Chicago, Boston and Washington, D.C., among other cities, are also using dry ice to help control their rat populations. New York City’s $40 million rat eradication program, launched in 2017, was created to address public health and quality of life issues in the city’s three rattiest areas. The city is tracking its progress through inspections of private and public property, schools and parks to record burrow counts and other evidence of rats, like droppings or tracks.
