Nancy Pelosi and Fakebook Dirty Tricks

“But at the end of the day, I don’t believe that our platform should take that down because I think there are things that different people get wrong. I’m sure a lot of leaders and public figures we respect do too, and I just don’t think that it is the right thing to say, ‘We’re going to take someone off the platform if they get things wrong, even multiple times.’’ Mr. Zuckerberg’s own pile of dumb mistakes were the same thing as anti-Semitic lies?

In Defense of Fahrenheit

In Defense of Fahrenheit

The Fahrenheit scale nearly perfectly captures the distribution of U.S. daily temperatures. The population-weighted temperature distribution

NOAA tracks daily temperatures at thousands of weather stations across the U.S. I pulled daily highs and lows for every day in 2018 for every zip code that has a weather station. Here’s what that data look like for two of the stations (Boston MA and Redwood City CA, which claims to have the best climate in the country):

Our goal is to use these data to estimate the distribution of temperatures that people experience in the U.S. Simply combining the data from all of these stations directly would not be quite what we want, because each station represents the daily highs and lows for a different number of people.

How some cities became rat-free zones

How some cities became rat-free zones

“If it weren’t for rats, I wouldn’t have had a job,” says Phil Merrill, head of the rat control programme in the Canadian province of Alberta. The rat control programme itself costs less than C$500,000 (US$372,000) annually, covering salaries for Merrill, six rat control zone officers and bait. The ARC estimated that if each farm had 20 rats and each household one rat, then the rat population of Alberta would be 2.1m.

Larry Roy, who co-wrote the ARC report, says he thinks it was “a very good, believable estimate at that time”.

Ways to break your systems code using volatile (2010)

Ways to break your systems code using volatile (2010)

The behavior of any given C implementation (a compiler plus target machine) must produce the same side effects as the abstract machine, but otherwise the standard mandates very little correspondence between the abstract machine and computation that actually happens on the target platform. The C standard gives us just a few ways to establish a connection between the abstract and actual machines:

Most C implementations offer additional mechanisms, such as inline assembly and extra library functions not mandated by the standard. The way the volatile connects the abstract and real semantics is this:

Historically, the connection between the abstract and actual machines was established mainly through accident: compilers weren’t good enough at optimizing to create an important semantic gap.

MakerLisp: Embedded Lisp Machine

The MakerLisp Machine is a portable, modular computer system,  designed to recapture the feel of classic computing, with modern hardware. 5/18/2019: Great Hackaday / Tindie meetup Saturday night after a day at the Bay Area Maker Faire, showed the machine, and met so many great people sharing their cool projects:

5/1/2019: Playing games on the MakerLisp Machine ! This talk is a little dense but if you’re interested, there’s a bunch of information about the machine and the MakerLisp software system.

Dependabot is now free

Dependabot is now free

Immediately after installing, Dependabot opened 5 PRs for our repository, proposing bumps to a number of crusty, out of dates gems. With Review Apps configured in StatusGator, we can quickly and easily launch a temporary instance of each of Dependabot’s dependency bump PRs. Since those edits are pushed to the Dependabot branches, could GitHub run static analysis on the code, find those breaking changes, and incorporate the updates themselves?

The race to 5G Is Bullshit

The race to 5G Is Bullshit

Everyone — the wireless industry, Democrats, Republicans, the major media, you name it — frames the building of next-generation 5G networks as a “race” in which the United States needs to demonstrate “leadership.” The other main argument for winning the “race” to 5G is that having the world’s best and fastest networks will create new economic opportunities for businesses of all kinds — we’ll enable self-driving cars and telemedicine and all the other stuff you hear about during interminable 5G slideshows at trade conferences. The “race” is to there to make serious trade-offs seem worth it so we can “win”

And once the “race” to build out 5G in big cities is “won,” the pressure to expand access to other places in the country will vanish, making that divide even worse.
