Why Fiction Beats Truth

Why Fiction Beats Truth

Yet when it came time to design gas chambers and prepare timetables for the Auschwitz trains, Nazi rationality emerged from its hiding place intact. And yet the Scientific Revolution began in London and Paris rather than in Cairo or Istanbul. Even if we need to pay some price for deactivating our rational faculties, the advantages of increased social cohesion are often so big that fictional stories routinely triumph over the truth in human history.

Gordon and a half-dozen other women shared with NPR details of working for delivery apps, which painted a picture of the epitome of gig work: accessible but high intensity, with pay that’s quick but unpredictable and hours that are flexible but unreliable.

Scotland to House Largest Tidal Turbine

Atlantis Energy director of turbine and engineering services Drew Blaxland told New Civil Engineer: “The AR2000 is expected to be the world’s largest single-axis tidal turbine and it will be deployed on the world’s largest tidal power project. “As the sole supplier of turbine generation equipment to the second phase of the MeyGen Project in Scotland, partnering with General Electric unlocks enormous opportunities to build on 10 years of research and development to now deliver more cost-effective, cleaner tidal power solutions for developers around the world. There have also been concerns that Brexit could have a significant impact on tidal energy investment in Scotland with Nova Innovation winning European Commission grant-funding for its Shetland off-grid project.

The richest 10% of households now represent 70% of all U.S. wealth

The richest 10% of households now represent 70% of all U.S. wealth

Deutsche Bank’s Torsten Sløk says that the distribution of household wealth in America has become even more disproportionate over the past decade, with the richest 10% of U.S. households representing 70% of all U.S. wealth in 2018, compared with 60% in 1989, according to a recent study by researchers at the Federal Reserve. To make a finer point, Fed researchers say the increase in wealth among the top 10% is largely a result of that cohort obtaining a larger concentration of assets: “The share of assets held by the top 10% of the wealth distribution rose from 55% to 64% since 1989, with asset shares increasing the most for the top 1% of households. Here’s a graphic from the Census Bureau showing the homeownership average since 1998:

“So in some sense the source of higher inequality is Fed policies, which pushed stock prices and home prices higher.

Using Anki and Spaced Repetition

Using Anki and Spaced Repetition

Creating flashcards needs to be easy use a tool like Polar so that you can create flashcards, comments, and annotations directly while you’re reading the material. I’m working on a feature for Polar to add this directly so that when you create a flashcard in Polar we automatically create a card with the context so you can click back to it. Use a tool like Polar to easily create flashcards and sync them to Anki.

RCE Without Native Code: Exploitation of a Write-What-Where in Internet Explorer

RCE Without Native Code: Exploitation of a Write-What-Where in Internet Explorer

At this point, it’s pretty much game over for arbitrary read and write access to the memory space of the current process. Exploitation, Part 2: From Memory Control to Code Execution
The next step at this point, traditionally, would be to leverage our memory read and write capabilities to initiate ROP-style execution, leading ultimately to a native payload stage. I conjecture that once an attacker has arbitrary read/write access to the process’s address space, there will always be ways to construct hazardous objects in memory that yield easy code execution.

Intel Announces 8 Core I9-9900KS: Every Core at 5Ghz, All the Time

Intel Announces 8 Core I9-9900KS: Every Core at 5Ghz, All the Time

Last year, Intel showcased a CPU during its keynote a processor with all of its cores at 5 GHz. Technically the CPU has a base frequency of 4.0 GHz, however it will only ever go down to that amount based on a default Intel BIOS (no consumer board uses the base BIOS specifications). Managing Your Startup Board

Managing Your Startup Board

Often executives are operating their businesses for long periods of time where non-exec board members aren’t familiar with the nuances of the changes in the company and therefore are surprised or unprepared when they come to your board meeting. But in general it’s not the best use of board time because much of that knowledge can be shared before the meeting and the team can come prepared for debate. You can have a 2-hour debate on important topics including pricing, product features, key hires, whatever and then still go away from the board meeting and have your executive team make decisions.
