How to Get Every Email Returned

How to Get Every Email Returned

We fling words out into the universe through text, email, Facebook, and more. Even people who hate writing have to do it, because you need to text your husband back, write your boss a condolence note and do better on Tinder than “hey.” To break through the clutter, to get attention and even to bring people over to your side.

A Curious Sequence of Prime Numbers

A Curious Sequence of Prime Numbers

We do not know whether every prime number appears in the Euclid-Mullin sequence. The similar sequence that chooses the largest instead of smallest prime that divides 1 plus the product of the previous terms avoids an infinite number of primes. I am drawn to adorable and amusing math, so I hope the Euclid-Mullin sequence contains all prime numbers.

TSMC to Keep Supplying Chips to Huawei

TSMC to Keep Supplying Chips to Huawei

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) plans to continue making chips for Huawei even as other companies in the global semiconductor ecosystem are complying with a U.S. ban on supplies to the Chinese electronics company. While TSMC’s shipments to Huawei will continue, the halt of components and software from other suppliers may still have some impact on TSMC, according to Credit Suisse analyst Randy Abrams in comments emailed to EE Times. Even Huawei smartphones sold in China will be less competitive if the ban remains during this year and next if the company lacks access to high-end RF chips, EDA software and IP, as well as Qualcomm chipsets, according to Abrams.

Ask HN: What are the numbers everyone should know in 2019?

Ask HN: What are the numbers everyone should know in 2019?

When you’re designing a performance-sensitive computer system, it is important to have an intuition for the relative costs of different operations. In particular, he gives a useful table of “Numbers Everyone Should Know” — that is, the cost of some fundamental operations:

Some useful figures that aren’t in Dean’s data can be found in this article comparing NetBSD 2.0 and FreeBSD 5.3 from 2005. His figures suggest the best-case system call overhead is now only ~60 nsec (for Linux on Nehelem), and that context switches cost about 30 microseconds (30,000 nsec) — when you account for the cost of flushing CPU caches, that is probably pretty reasonable.

We Can’t Destroy Planet Earth

We Can’t Destroy Planet Earth

One of my personal heroes, Stewart Brand, made this same claim recently:

Before I expand upon this and put Earth, mother nature, and humanity into context, an aside here to say that individual life is precious. Climate change is already leading to the loss of both individual lives and species, and for that reason it’s one of the most important challenges we face today. If nuclear war broke out across five continents, it would be a very long time (if ever) that the people of Fulaga learned of the collapse of civilization.

Is reason the slave of the passions?

Is reason the slave of the passions?

The core of the problem is that you seem to buy into the old Platonic view that reason and emotion are somehow in conflict, that passion is the unruly stallion that needs to be kept in check by the cool power of rationality. When Hume advocated reason as “the slave of the passions” he clearly did not mean that it would blindly do their bidding. Hume was not being descriptive but prescriptive—reason not only is “but ought only to be the slave to the passions… and must serve and obey them.”

Can law firms be liable for fake reviews? Pennsylvania firm says no

Can law firms be liable for fake reviews? Pennsylvania firm says no

According to Wolfe’s lawyers, Christine Elzer of the Elzer Firm and Gregory Paul of Morgan & Paul, Kraemer Manes directed non-lawyer employees to solicit their friends and relatives to post five-star reviews of the firm, allegedly rewarding employees with paid time off when they secured positive reviews. Kraemer Manes, which is represented by Michael Betts, denied in its motion to dismiss Wolfe’s claims that any of its lawyers solicited false reviews of the firm. And even assuming the truth of Wolfe’s allegation that she was deceived by the firm’s online reviews, Kraemer Manes argued, she can’t show she was harmed as a result.

Liberal America’s Single-Family Hypocrisy

Liberal America’s Single-Family Hypocrisy

As the horrors of urban renewal came into view, more politically empowered, usually white communities rallied to get their neighborhoods “downzoned,” severely limiting the number of new housing units that could be built. But without zoning and land-use changes, public housing and more affordable market-rate apartments will remain illegal to build in the majority of neighborhoods close to public transit, jobs, good schools, and other amenities—precisely the kind of neighborhoods a compassionate society would want to give more people access to. It’s the same story for every single-family-home neighborhood: “There are a huge variety of needs in our housing market, and not all of them are met by either a single-family home or a six-story apartment building,” said Lisa Bender, president of the Minneapolis City Council and a major champion of the city’s 2040 plan.
