Scotland to House Largest Tidal Turbine on the Planet

Atlantis Energy director of turbine and engineering services Drew Blaxland told New Civil Engineer: “The AR2000 is expected to be the world’s largest single-axis tidal turbine and it will be deployed on the world’s largest tidal power project. “As the sole supplier of turbine generation equipment to the second phase of the MeyGen Project in Scotland, partnering with General Electric unlocks enormous opportunities to build on 10 years of research and development to now deliver more cost-effective, cleaner tidal power solutions for developers around the world. There have also been concerns that Brexit could have a significant impact on tidal energy investment in Scotland with Nova Innovation winning European Commission grant-funding for its Shetland off-grid project.

Logical Fallacies in Software Engineering

Logical Fallacies in Software Engineering

Like other people of mind work, software engineers require a lot of thinking, analysis, and mapping of reality to fulfill their job. Mind processes are complex and multicontextual, so are the fallacies one may fall for on the way of thinking. Some engineers may use such fallacy, exposing all the technicalities of their job to cover incompetence and justify failure in rolling out feature in time.

Propofol-induced deep sedation reduces emotional episodic memory reconsolidation

Propofol-induced deep sedation reduces emotional episodic memory reconsolidation

A method to selectively impair reconsolidation of specific emotional or traumatic memories in humans could translate to an effective treatment for conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder. One dose of propofol following memory reactivation selectively impaired subsequent emotional episodic memory retrieval in a time-dependent manner, consistent with reconsolidation impairment. We therefore tested the hypothesis that the intravenous anesthetic propofol impairs reconsolidation of emotional memories reactivated immediately before anesthetic administration in psychiatrically and neurologically healthy individuals who had been referred for endoscopy for clinical indications.

The 25¢ Apple II Real Time Clock (1981)

The 25¢ Apple II Real Time Clock (1981)

This philosophy of doing things the easy way makes one wonder at the prices that are being charged for some of the peripheral boards for the Apple, particularly real time clocks. When either one of these pins is grounded, the processor finishes the machine language instruction it is currently working on, saves the program counter and processor status register onto the stack, (if you don’t know what that means it isn’t important) and jumps to a program somewhere in memory called an interrupt handling routine or interrupt handler. The second difference is that NMI and IRQ have their interrupt handlers at different places in memory.

Huawei’s Yearslong Rise Is Littered with Accusations of Theft and Dubious Ethics

Huawei’s Yearslong Rise Is Littered with Accusations of Theft and Dubious Ethics

Huawei has since grown from a little-known interloper into China’s global tech champion, the world’s biggest maker of telecoms gear, a leader in next-generation 5G networks, and a significant source of friction between the world’s biggest powers. In one case, a relative of Huawei’s founder Ren Zhengfei who worked at Motorola Inc. is alleged to have brought secret details of the U.S. company’s technology to a meeting in Beijing. Last week, the Trump administration unveiled measures that threaten to cut Huawei off from critical American suppliers and ban it from doing business in the U.S.

Driving the crackdown is the Trump administration’s belief that Huawei, like all Chinese companies, has no choice but to abide by orders from Beijing––and that its standing as the No. 1 global telecoms player makes it a powerful tool for China’s ruling Communist Party, which U.S. officials believe has grown increasingly authoritarian in recent years.

Why Computer Programmers Should Stop Calling Themselves Engineers

Why Computer Programmers Should Stop Calling Themselves Engineers

In the Silicon Valley technology scene, it’s common to use the bare term “engineer” to describe technical workers. The term is probably a shortening of “software engineer,” but its use betrays a secret: “Engineer” is an aspirational title in software development. The title “engineer” is cheapened by the tech industry.

A plot to kill Kim Il Sung ended in mutiny and murder (2018)

The bizarre and deadly events that unfolded on the island of Silmido were covered up until details were revealed by a South Korean Defense Ministry Truth Commission in 2006. Yang was a 21-year old volunteer in the air force when he was deployed to the island of Silmido off the western coast of South Korea in 1970. The Defense Ministry Truth Commission report and Yang, the Unit 684 survivor, both insist criminals were not members of the organization.

Bose headphones spy on listeners: lawsuit (2017)

(Reuters) – Bose Corp spies on its wireless headphone customers by using an app that tracks the music, podcasts and other audio they listen to, and violates their privacy rights by selling the information without permission, a lawsuit charged. The complaint filed on Tuesday by Kyle Zak in federal court in Chicago seeks an injunction to stop Bose’s “wholesale disregard” for the privacy of customers who download its free Bose Connect app from Apple Inc or Google Play stores to their smartphones. Dore, a partner at Edelson PC, said customers do not see the Bose app’s user service and privacy agreements when signing up, and the privacy agreement says nothing about data collection.
