When a Fatal Grizzly Mauling Goes Viral

When a Fatal Grizzly Mauling Goes Viral

The couple, who normally lived in Whitehorse, the Yukon’s small capital city, had flown in to their cabin on October 4, intending to stay until the new year, when Théorêt was due back at school. The next day, at 1:30 in the afternoon, I was at home in Whitehorse when I saw this on the Twitter feed of the Yukon Mounties:

Yukon RCMP and Yukon Coroner’s Service are investigating the death of two individuals following a suspected bear attack on November 26, northeast of Mayo, near the NWT border. She heard the news before the RCMP and the coroner made it public—she’d heard rumors of a grizzly attack, and then a letter arrived for the parents of children at Whitehorse Elementary, announcing that Valérie Théorêt had died.

A history of tea, the second most-consumed beverage in the world (2017)

A history of tea, the second most-consumed beverage in the world (2017)

Our history of tea begins with the legend of the “divine famer” Shen Nong who is credited in many ancient Chinese texts with various agricultural accomplishments. However, some scholars of ancient China now believe Shen Nong might in fact originally have referred to a group of people, living within China and utilizing particularly advanced agricultural techniques for the era. Over time this people’s knowledge of farming was canonized in the form of legends about a divine farmer who shared their name, and whose fame ultimately eclipsed their own.

SpaceX Raptor: Methane fueled full-flow staged combustion cycle engine

SpaceX Raptor: Methane fueled full-flow staged combustion cycle engine

So in order to shove more propellant into the engine, you could either increase the pressure in the tanks, or just shoot the propellant into the combustion chamber with a high powered PUMP. We have the gas generator cycle, the partial flow staged combustion cycle and lastly we’ll look at the full flow staged combustion cycle… and perhaps in a future article I’ll try and do a full rundown of all liquid fueled rocket engines including fun new alternatives like the electric pump fed engines seen on Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket. The turbopump has a few main parts, a mini rocket engine called the preburner, a turbine connected to a shaft and then a pump or two that push propellant into the combustion chamber.

The U.S. Debt Ceiling Expired on March 1 and Nobody Cared – But They Will

The U.S. Debt Ceiling Expired on March 1 and Nobody Cared – But They Will

Markets didn’t move and the holders of the $22 trillion in national debt didn’t utter a peep of worry that the U.S. government wouldn’t pay its interest or redeem its bonds. When the limit is reached, the U.S. Treasury can’t borrow any more, which one would think would cause a crisis of confidence, severely impacting the real economy for fear the government would default on our debt. In December we endured a government shutdown and after 6 weeks Congress and the President agreed to a budget bill that included paying its debt.

New Swiss studies claim 5G increases body temperature of insects

New Swiss studies claim 5G increases body temperature of insects

The Swiss organization Pro Natura has published new studies, which indicate that the frequencies used by 5G increase the body temperature of insects. Now, new studies indicate that insects are sensitive to 5G waves: A recent study has shown that insects exposed to 5G radiation have experienced an increase in their body temperature. According to the scientists in charge, the frequency range around 6 GHz does not pose any risk to the health of insects, but from 10 GHz an increase in temperature is observed in the body of exposed individuals.

Ebtrees: Elastic Binary Trees

Ebtrees: Elastic Binary Trees

This article was initially posted on Wikipedia in 2008, which explains why it’s written at the 3rd person and looks familiar to articles on binary trees. After many arguments with them, I was told that Wikipedia cannot hold original work, only copies of what can be found somewhere else, and I gave up the fight, realizing that for once I found dumber than me! At least they accepted to let me retrieve the original work so that I can publish it somewhere else (I didn’t even have a copy of it).

Unexpected Surge in Global Methane Levels

Unexpected Surge in Global Methane Levels

Thus, there is wide agreement among experts that, regardless of the drivers behind the surge, reducing emissions from fossil-fuel production and distribution, primarily through ending leaks and venting, is one of the few options available to control global methane levels and that this option is the most practical one. [20]

While the size of the role of fossil-fuel production and distribution in driving the recent growth of global methane is hotly debated, it is well documented that fossil-fuel production is one of the major drivers in sustaining industrial era methane levels. The lifetime of methane is relatively short (∼11 years), and the elevated global methane levels of the industrial era only occur as a result of large anthropogenic emissions.

These may be the first images of dogs, and they’re wearing leashes (2017)

Carved into a sandstone cliff on the edge of a bygone river in the Arabian Desert, a hunter draws his bow for the kill. But she cautions that more work will be needed to confirm both the age and meaning of the depictions. Then about 7000 to 8000 years ago, people here became herders, based on livestock bones found at Jubbah; that’s likely when pictures of cattle, sheep, and goats began to dominate the images.
