Neal Stephenson Explains His Vision of the Digital Afterlife

Neal Stephenson Explains His Vision of the Digital Afterlife

Stephenson also spends a lot of time examining how the internet and social media, which Dodge and other characters often refer to in Fall as the Miasma, is irrevocably changing society and altering the fabric of reality. The reason that social media systems are architected the way they are, as I mentioned before, is because humans are expensive and you can’t scale that kind of system to serve billions and billions of people. So that means that access to that kind of higher-quality view of the world becomes a class-based situation where people who’ve got the money to pay for or partially pay for human editors and curators are getting higher-quality info, which I think is just a slight kind of magnification or intensification of the way things are now anyway.

An Invisible City Beneath Paris

An Invisible City Beneath Paris

The plan of the above-ground city is traced carefully in pale silver-gray ink, such that, if you read only for the gray, you can discern the faint footprints of apartment blocks and embassies, parks and ornamental gardens, boulevards and streets, the churches, the railway lines and the train stations, all hovering there, intricate and immaterial. The map’s real content—the topography it inks in black and blue and orange and red—is the invisible city, the realm out of which, over centuries, the upper city has been hewn and drawn, block by block. A subterranean town-planning system was established whereby chambers and tunnels were named in relation to the streets above them, thus creating a mirror city, with the ground serving as the line of symmetry.

Vignette: add photos to your contacts by searching public social media profiles

Vignette allows you to add photos to your contacts by searching public social media profiles. My hope is to keep developing and improving Vignette over time; that is made possible by the financial support of in-app purchase. :)

Vignette works by scanning your contacts and seeing what information it can amass about their social media presence.

The difference between keyboard and screen reader navigation

The difference between keyboard and screen reader navigation

Apart from things like live regions, screen readers only speak the content they’re focused on, and here we need to draw an important distinction: keyboard focus and screen reader focus are not the same thing! If a screen reader user uses the tab key to navigate content, all they will hear is the name of each focusable element as it receives keyboard focus. The rest of the time, screen reader users have an enormous range of commands at their disposal for reading and navigating content independently of keyboard focus.

KidSwitch: Identifying Kids in Apps and Sites

KidSwitch: Identifying Kids in Apps and Sites

So it’s very easy for kids to find the wrong content; or to look at the right content, but on a platform which wrongly assumes they’re adults. Today, we’re unveiling KidSwitch, a new piece of technology which automatically detects whether the user engaging with content is a child (or an adult) without the need for an age-gate. Once a child is detected, it can switch the app to ‘kid’ mode (privacy, turning off certain social features etc), or – if it deduces that the user is over 13 – leave the app in adult mode.

Self-distancing can help you make better decisions

Self-distancing can help you make better decisions

This concept is based on construal level theory, which suggests that creating psychological distance in one domain can promote psychological distance in other domains, so that increasing people’s psychological distance from a certain event by changing their linguistic self-distance could affect how close they feel to that event from an emotional perspective. However, when people use self-distancing techniques, by asking themselves what kind of advice they would give to a friend if they were in the same situation, people are able to reduce this asymmetry in their insights, and apply the same reasoning skills to their own dilemmas as they would to those of others. The two most notable techniques for this involve using self-distancing language in your inner monologue, or visualizing other people’s perspective when analyzing events that you’ve experienced.

Did Cooking in HotSprings Make Human’s Brainy?

Did Cooking in HotSprings Make Human’s Brainy?

H , roughly 2m years ago, early human ancestors evolved large brains and began fashioning relatively advanced stone tools, is one of the great mysteries of evolution. Dr Summons and his colleagues say the hot springs would have provided a convenient “pre-fire” means of cooking food. Nonetheless, fire would have offered a distinct advantage to humans, once they had mastered the art of controlling it since, unlike a hot spring, it is a portable resource.
